Read: When Lightning Comes
into a Jar By: Patricia PolaccoFocus on Descriptive and
Precise Language
Objective: Students will listen
and be involved in a
Interactive read aloud where I
will highlight descriptive and
precise words and phrases.
They will make a list and jot
down words or phrases that
they like from the text.
Objective: Students will work
on tier two vocabulary that we
choose from When Lightning
Comes into a Jar. They will
make their own sentences
using the new words they
gather from the text.
Students need to be reading
on their own they should be
either reading their literature
circle books or their
independent reading books.
They can also write book
letters to me or their
classmates during this time.
Teacher will be having
meetings with students
assessing their reading skills
with informal reading
conferences and having them
summarize texts. She will be
noting topics children are
having trouble with so that she
can make mini lessons for the
following day.

knowledge, and text clues to
figure out the meaning and
what the text is comparing.
They will also learn to
understand why writing
metaphors in a personal
narrative are more enticing
and descriptive.
Students will be independently
reading their own personal
novels or their literature circle
novels. The teacher will be
having informal meetings and
assessments with students.
She will focus on metaphors
and she will choose metaphors
from the texts they are
reading to talk about so she
can see if they understood
how to decipher a metaphor.
Students will work on editing
their personal narratives. They
will add the list of words they
chose in the morning into their
personal narratives to make
their language more precise
and descriptive.
The teacher will be having
informal short meetings with
the children to find out what
they are writing about and to
see if they are adding/ editing
descriptive words into their
text.

Students will be reading their


literature circle books or
independent books. Or they will
be getting ready for literature
circles or writing letters to me or
their reading partners. They will
post it note an inference or
prediction they are able to
produce while reading. The
teacher will have informal
conferences with students
assessing their understanding of
their individual books and
listening to fluency. She will also
be helping students understand
Literature Circle books especially
to those students whose levels
are lower than their lit circle
books.
Students will have student driven
conversations in their literature
circles. They should all be half
way through their books. They will
talk about connections,
predictions, symbols and things
that they found interesting in the
novel. The teacher will not
intervene during the meeting. She
will walk around during the
meetings making sure that
students are engaged and doing
what they are suppose to be
doing. She will also be checking to
see if students are reading their
novels and documenting thoughts
and ideas in their readers
notebook or on post its.

minds and if those pictures match
the illustrations for the book.
Objective- Students will be
comparing their own imagery
pictures with the actual text in the
Illustrations.
Teacher will be emphasizing the
visual descriptive language as
well and introducing mood.
