Literary Argument
Love is a powerful thing that can make people do anything just to find their true love. In A
Midsummer Nights Dream when the four lovers try to settle with their true love, they are faced
with challenging obstacles, leading the four to do life threatening things. I think that if the
characters were willing to risk their lives to be with one another, then they would do anything.
So, I strongly believe that the characters in A Midsummer Nights Dream would do anything for
love.
First, Helena greatly loves Demetrius even though he makes it clear that he doesnt love
her anymore. This doesnt stop Helena from following Demetrius nonstop just to be with him
again. She even followed him deep into the woods risking her life from wild beasts and other
things just to get Demetrius to like her again. Furthermore, why was Demetrius in the woods to
begin with? Well, he was doing it to find his true love and convince her to marry him. This shows
how the characters would risk their lives by traveling far in dangerous places for love. In the
end, not just Helena would give her life to love, but so would Demetrius.
Second, Hermia and Lysander love each other, but Hermias father Egeus wants her to
marry Demetrius. Egeus decided to ask Theseus to back him up. Theseus said to Hermia,
Upon that day either prepare to die for disobedience to your fathers will, or else to wed
Demetrius... Even with the threat to Hermias life, it didnt stop Hermia and Lysander from
running away together. The two lovers knew that they wouldnt be able to go back home and if
they were found, they would probably be killed. It also wasnt a planned runaway, so they
brought almost nothing with them. They were willing to give up their previous lives for each
other. Without a doubt, if Hermia and Lysander were ready to start their lives over again, then
surely they would do anything for love.
Last of all, when Demetrius and Lysander fall in love with Helena because of a love
flower, they fight each other to win her over. Lysander says,Helen, I love thee. By my life, I do. I
swear by that which I will lose for thee, to prove him false that says I love thee not. Demetrius
then says, I say I love thee more than he can do. The fight between Lysander and Demetrius
went back and forth. Then Hermia and Helena broke into a fight in the confusion of why the men
suddenly fell in love with Helena. The four lovers werent afraid to harm each other to get their
true love. Clearly, the characters would harm others for love.
In conclusion, the characters in A Midsummer Nights Dream would do anything for love;
from risking their lives, to harming one, they would do it. Not just those four characters, but a lot
of the other characters as well. Obviously, love overwhelms the hearts of these characters.
