The student will be able to write and understand their vocabulary words without
any errors.

Correctly spelling words with short and long vowel sounds, r-controlled vowels,
and consonant blend patterns. Generalizing learned spelling patterns (e.g., word
families) when writing words. Correctly spelling common irregularly-spelled
grade-appropriate high frequency words.

Materials:
Key Vocabulary:

Jellyfish
Dolphin
Whale
Crab
Seal

Otter
Sea Lion
Turtle
Lobster

Pencil
Vocabulary Worksheet
Whiteboard or Chalkboard (for teacher) and markers or chalk.
Papers with the vocabulary words, their definitions, and picture for each
student plus one for the teacher.
Extra papers with the words, their definitions, and pictures on different
index cards for independent practice.

Procedures:

Opening Seto Can anyone give me some names of animals that live in or near water?
o Let five or six students answer.
o Then write the vocabulary words on the board while telling them about each animal.
For example, while writing the word dolphin on the board, you can talk about how smart they are.
Instruction Sequenceo Have the paper passers pass out the Vocabulary worksheet.
o While they do that, tell the students what they need to do:
Write their name (First and Last) and number on the line.
Then look at the picture and the word.
Then turn it over and write the word six times on the lines provides.
After they complete that, then they can go on to independent practice.
Independent Practiceo Throughout the week, the students can play a matching game with the vocabulary words, their definitions, and pictures on index cards.
In the game, the students will need to correctly match the word with its definition and picture.

Assessment Tool(s):
The assessment for this lesson will be that at the end of the week all students will need to write a story using the vocabulary works while also writing them correctly.

Interventions/Extensions:

Students with high abilities: Will be given bonus words (that are provided to all students) for each spelling test. (For this test the words will be: Octopus and
Squid.)
Students with learning disabilities: The teacher will provide Take Home versions of the matching game for each spelling test.
Students with visual impairments: Provide an enlarged copy of the worksheet and game to the students.
Students with hearing impairments: Write everything on the board as it is being said.
Students with physical disabilities: Be there to help them with holding the pencil, writing the words, etc.
