Things to do Before, During, and After Reading

Before reading
Read the title and discuss what the book might be about
Ask leading questions to help your child begin thinking about
the story
Look at and talk about the pictures in the book
Help your child notice details in pictures
Activate prior knowledge by having your child discuss what
they already know about the topics in the book
Introduce new vocabulary that may be challenging to them
During reading:
Stop reading at predetermined places to discuss what is
happening in the storyThis stop should not interrupt
the meaning of the story but it should be a natural break
in the text (end of page or chapter)
Clarify any misunderstandings that your child may
haveClear up any confusions and check for
understanding
Predict what they think will happen next in the story and
give specific reasons for why they think that will happen
During the reading is a good opportunity to draw attention
to any concepts that the child may have missed or are
struggling to understand
After reading:
Your child can:
Discuss what happened in the story, what the
characters did, how could it have ended differently
Retell the story using the correct sequence
Write about the book and draw a picture
Create a new story using the same format
If the story is short, reread the story for fluency, voice,
and understandingrereading stories helps to build
childrens fluency, comprehension, and confidence
Ask your child if he or she would recommend the book to
friends and why

Reading with children

Make this time enjoyable and relaxing
20-25 minutes each night for primary studentsHave fun!

Enjoy the book with your child

You can listen to the child, read to the child, or take turns reading

Give wait time

Let the child sound out the word or use picture clues before helping

Accept approximations unless meaning is lost

Every small mistake does not need to be corrected unless it changes the
meaning

Ask emergent readers to point below each word

Once a child becomes a fluent reader, this is not necessary

After reading, talk to your child about the story

Was there a funny or scary part or do they have a favorite part?

When a child makes a

substitution or an error

Waitsee if your child can fix it on their own by the end

of the sentence
2. AskDoes that look right? Does that sound right?
Does that make sense?
3. TellIf the child still has difficulty, tell them the correct word

Prompts for when

your child is stuck

What can you try?
