They are the ones who will be contributing to our fundraisers
that will help us make profits. They will also be buying the solar
chargers that contribute to less greenhouse gas emissions.
Communities in areas
Although emissions are not directly being lowered in this area,

our local community could go a long way for communities like
these.
Local city councils
Organizations like these would be the ones to carry on and make

Global Issue/Challenge - Abigail
Emissions of a variety of gases has been a cause of the melting Himalayan glaciers. We are
addressing the issue of the melting glaciers by creating an action plan to reduce emissions
including greenhouse gases, soot, and others.

Evidence of Issue/Challenge - Abigail

The Himalayan glaciers are retreating at an alarming rate. In fact the glaciers are expected
to melt completely by 2035. One of the main causes has been traced back to fossil fuel and
greenhouse gas emissions as well as soot. The melting of the glaciers has already caused the sea
level to rise over eleven feet which could result in flooding, severe storms, and more forcing
people to be displaced. Some of the melt water from the glaciers has already turned into different
lakes. An example is the Imjo Tsho in Nepal that began forming in the 1960s. These lakes have
already had an impact of villages below. There have been Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFS),
flash floods, and landslides. Reducing emissions could have a large impact of the glaciers. Their
annual retreating rate of ten to fifty-nine meters could lower. Villages near the Himalayas would
not have to constantly be under the threat of a flood or landslide. There have already been plans
to reduce emissions such as Chinas plan to reduce CO2 by 40 to 45% per unit of GDP by 2020.
This is an issue thats need to be small as it is already having devastating effects.

Action plan - Josh

Greenhouse gas emissions are a big problem for glaciers. As they melt, livelihoods are lost, so
what we are going to do is reduce emissions. We plan to have a bake sale to raise money to buy
solar USB chargers. Then, we will have a bike to school day where everyone in the grade that has
the most people that bike to school will receive a solar USB charger.

Project Goals -Josh
1. We are trying to reduce emissions.

2. Spread awareness of items that can help to reduce emissions.

3. Spread awareness of the melting Himalayan glaciers

Resources - Andrew

For the Bake sale, we would use our 500$ to buy cookie dough, to sell, then our group
would raise enough money from the bake sale to buy enough portable solar chargers for
half/entire grade (depending on sales). We would then need volunteers to help with the bike to
school day, tallying the number of people from each grade that arrived by biking or walking. Our
group would then hand out the solar chargers based on the raffle (and again, costs) and give a
group demonstration on how they work, and what they save to the environment.

Publicity - Bryce

Our group plans on raising awareness for the K2A plan by creating signs, talking about it during
community meeting, and asking local stores if they can set up a small jar for donations. If we can
have time during community meeting we plan on addressing a plan for another bike to school day
and if enough grades/people participate then we will have a raffle and give out solar USB
chargers to the winning participates.

Sustainability - Bryce

Our group will use our ideas from publicity and create more concerning facts to start getting
more people on board to help our project. If we get car companies on board with the idea of less
soot emissions then they could continue raising money. Most car companies are already starting
to create cleaner cars, so if we enlist our group project onto them then it could continue growing.

Challenges - Josh

A few challenges that we may have in our process are: not having enough funds, not being able to
buy 120 of the same kind of solar charger, and not being able to buy enough ingredients for the
cookies. For our first challenge, if push comes to shove, we plan to have a raffle in the winning
grade. Whomever wins wins the raffle will get a solar USB charger. For this raffle, there would
only be as many solar USB chargers as we could buy. For not being able to buy 120 of the same
kind of solar USB charger, we plan to find similar alternatives, or if that is not possible, hold a
raffle. If we can not buy enough cookie dough, then we plan to buy pie ingredients or cake
ingredient.

Evidence of Success/Evaluation - Andrew

Whenever you charge your phone, the cost equivalent of the energy used to get the
battery to 100% is 50 cents in the US. With the added waste of energy when leaving your phone
charger in the wall outlet when you are not charging your phone, it is important that we spread
awareness about electricity conservation. To do this, we host a bike to school day, which is great
for spreading awareness and for health, and then give away the chargers to the students, who
rely on wall outlets to charge their phones, and present a new way to charge the portable
communication products that everyone owns in this
