Event Description:
-6PM (Before show): Open discussion and cultural finger food in International
Commons (Coleman) focusing on the influence of Latin culture on American
music and culture in general.
- Invite Music and/or Dance Dept. Professors, Weis Center Staff, all students
and professors (especially targeting Dance, Music, and Spanish Departments)
-Attend Weis Center event together at 7:30
Proposed Learning Outcomes:
Learning Outcome #1: Attendees will consider topics around the tango tradition
(e.g. history, cultural diffusion) that broaden their perspectives around music,
dance, and meaning making.
Learning Outcome #2: Attendees will consider the ways that tango and various
other Latin art forms have been woven into the fabric of American life and
influenced public perceptions of Latin@/Hispanic identity and stereotypes. Consider
the shift in perspective around the tango (more widespread acceptance due to
social status and place) over time.
Rationale: Students rarely have the opportunity to engage in structured reflection
and/or discussion prior to or in response to Weis Center events, which are
intentionally scheduled to expose the Bucknell and Lewisburg communities to a
diverse breadth of cultures and perspectives.
Philosophy: Relate to ways that Bucknell students and professors approach their
crafts and relationships with others.
Action Step/Skill: Discussion of the music and dance might consider such topics
as the relationship between the music and the cultural, historical, and sociological
contexts which it portrays and in which it was produced. Additionally, issues of
social class and place could be included in the discussion. Materials will be provided
on the tango tradition, and specifically the French Argentinean contemporary tango
ensembles approach to their art and expression.

Tamale Party: April 11th 5PM, Craft Center

Event Description:
-Mexican vs. Guatemalan recipes: cook-off or cooking lessons
-Contact student representatives* (at least one) from each ethnic group
-Ingredients, prep time
-Invite Spanish Dept. Professors and students; Invite all on the Contact List
established from Feliz Navidad sign-up sheets
-Loteria, and Playlist w/student requests, featuring music of various
nationalities/ethnicities
Proposed Learning Outcomes:
Learning Outcome #1: Students will explore themselves as representatives of
diverse cultures, recognize and appreciate rich variety in food traditions, and have
the opportunity to share personal and broader cultural narratives with other
students.
Learning Outcome #2: Students will gain practical knowledge regarding the
preparation and presentation of varying tamale recipes and relevant traditions.
Rationale: Students have discussed divergent ways of preparing, serving, and
consuming tamales depending on cultural tradition, and this event would provide
the resources and the opportunity to share experiences and cultural knowledge with
one another.
Philosophy: Establish a precedent of cross-cultural exchange and participation,
and promote awareness of the diversity within the Latin@/Hispanic group on
campus.
Action Step/Skill: Coordinate with the students who formerly discussed their
attachment and loyalty to their cultural traditions in terms of tamale recipes, and
encourage those students to take ownership of the exchange of narratives and
recipes at the event.
