Carnival Workers
Dedicated to making kids smilelike
dentists.
However, they work in difficult
conditions.
Low salary
Long working hours
Always on the move

Carnival Workers
Lifestyle
Due to constant mobility, carnival
workers rely on employers for housing,
the trailers we live in are tiny and
disgusting.

Drug use is a common issue.

Most individuals join a traveling
carnival, to usually flee from a
problem, or to feel accepted
elsewhere.

Health
It is more likely that stationed carnival
workers will commit to seeing a dentist
as opposed to migrant carnival
workers.
According to Dr. Kilanowskis research:
56% of carnival children see private dentists
43% of migrant children see private dentists

Barriers to dental care.

1) Financial Limitations
The ability to access regular dental care is directly related to
annual income. As of April 2015 the average annual salary
is $26,000.

2) Mobile lifestyle

Frequent travels from town to town

make it extremely difficult to receive dental services that require follow up appointments such as orthodontic
care.

3) Carnival workers speak Carny Jargon

A secret language, ever-changing form of communication that designed to be impossible to
understand by an outsider. Immigrants/contractors.

4) Fragmented education and lack of knowledge of

available services.

Outreach Goals
Provide free dental care to 200 carnival workers a year
Provide on-site services for workers convenience
Provide hygiene and nutrition education to workers
Prevention is key!

diversity of the population served.

How is this funded?

-Seek financial support from ADA foundation and partnership with
Delta Dental.
-Seek supply donations from Henry Schein and Oral-B.

Raise awareness of our program

-Target local carnival/fair with bilingual posters, flyers, and advertising.

each worker
-Separate patients into emergency and non-emergency
cases
-Patients are given 1 hour (maximum) appointments
