Lierre, Kieth. Vegetarian Myth Food, Justice, and Sustainability. Flashpoint Press 1st ed.
Crescent City, Calif.: Flashpoint, 2009. Print.
The Vegetarian Myth Food, Justice, and Sustainability is a book written by Lierre Keith.
She was a vegan for twenty years and wrote the book to express her rage against the vegan and
vegetarian lifestyle. The book is separated into four basic chapters, three of them touching basis
on the moral, political and nutritional aspects of vegetarianism. The last chapter is about how to
save the world without having the idea that by not eating animals you are saving the planet.
The book is a really good source because it focuses on pointing out the down side of
vegetarianism. Since I am a vegetarian, I have a strong and personal view on this topic. While I
was reading certain parts of the book I became angry and defensive. Not being biased was really
hard for me, but I still found many facts that I could use for my final portfolio. My topic is about
vegetarianism and why the idea and the lifestyle of not eating meat is becoming more common in
different countries around the world. I can use this source to talk about the negatives about
vegetarianism and why it is still becoming common.

I know this is a credible source for many reasons. First of all, this source is a book that I
found in the library at UNCC. This alone gave me a big clue that it was a credible source. This
book also has many reviews which is also a clue that it is a credible source. The bibliography in
the back of the book helped me draw a conclusion that the author did their research on the things
that they wrote about.
Maurer, Donna. Vegetarianism: Movement or Moment? Philadelphia, PA: Temple UP, 2002.
Print
Vegetarianism: Movement or Moment? Is a book written by author Donna Maurer. The
book has eight chapters, each focusing on different aspects of vegetarianism. Maurer writes
about vegetarianism broadly from the history in North America to the modern vegetarian
movement. Maurer also writes about organizations in North America that have been promoting
vegetarianism for years, but have not been successful attracting people in becoming vegetarians.
The last chapter is mainly about the future of the vegetarian movement which was very
interesting.
At first I was very skeptical about the book because I could not find much information
that I did not know before. After skimming it and going to the different chapters I began to read
about organizations that have been promoting vegetarianism for many years. This grabbed my
attention because I could use this information in my project in many ways. I can talk about how
vegetarianism has not spread as much over the years, even with all of these organizations putting
work and time in promoting this lifestyle. Since my topic is about why or why not is

vegetarianism becoming more common around the world in different countries this book is a
good resource to study the ideology and strategies of these organizations around the world. The
book also talks about the food industrys role in promoting and accepting vegetarian diets.
Restaurants and college campuses are becoming more accepting in vegetarian diets and are
providing many different choices for people that choose this lifestyle. All the information in the
book would bring up more questions in my mind about vegetarianism which is what this inquiry
project is all about.
I know this is a credible source for many reasons. This source is a book that I checked out
from the UNCC library which tells me that it is a very reliable source. The book also has many
positive reviews online and it is a best-selling novel also. All of these clues have given me the
indication that this book is a very reliable and credible source.

The Global Movement- Meatless Monday. Meatless Monday. Web. 20 Feb. 2015.
http://www.meatlessmonday.com/the-global-movement/
This source is a website that I found while I was researching the globalization of
vegetarianism. This particular article from the website has information about different countries
around the world that are active in Meatless Monday. Meatless Monday is the idea that on
Mondays people dont eat meat and restaurants serve meals with no meat in them. This article
has information on countries like Australia, Brazil, Honduran, Italy and many more. In each

section of a country that is participating there is a summary on how the movement began in each
country and it gives information about each country individually.
I really liked this source because it was very interesting to me. I liked to see how all of
these different countries had adopted the Meatless Monday movement. This source does not
focus on vegetarianism, but the idea of not eating meat once a week is very interesting to me. I
can use this source in my inquiry project because it has information about different countries and
how this movement has spread. I can talk about how people are all into the idea of Meatless
Monday, but are very uptight when it comes to talking about becoming vegetarian and not eating
meat at all. Looking into this source can help me throughout my project to see how this
movement has influenced the vegetarianism movement.
This source does have a .com at the end of the URL which made me question it was a
credible source or not. Even though this particular website does have a .com which means that
it is a commercial website, it is also linked to the Monday Campaigns organization. The website
also has an About Us tab and has information about the founder, president, senior creative
director, and more that are associated with the MeatlessMonday.com website. There is also a
history tab which shows the history of Meatless Monday and how it has grown. This source is a
reliable source because it has many facts and references all over their website that helped me
infer that this is a credible source.

"Vegetarian ProCon.org." ProConorg Headlines. Web. 19 Feb. 2015.

http://vegetarian.procon.org/
The article on vegetarian in the website of ProCon.org had a lot of information. The pros
and cons of vegetarianism were listed and explained. The website also provided a background on
vegetarianism, mostly in the United States. Information from 570 BC to 2013 on vegetarianism
was provided with many facts on how this way of living has evolved over the years. The website
also provided YouTube videos that touched bases on vegetarianism.
This article is relevant in providing background to my question and topic. I read a lot of
information about how vegetarianism has grown over the years. I can use a lot of the information
in this website because it is not biased and it shows the good and the bad about vegetarianism. I
really enjoyed reading the background on Should people become vegetarians? because I found
interesting things. One thing that really caught my attention was how the USDA has recently
changed the My Plate showing the five essential food groups by replacing the Meat and
Beans category to the Protein category and the Milk category to Dairy. This source will
be very useful throughout my research and my final website portfolio.
This website ends with .org which is a big hint that it is a credible source. There was
also a section that stated that it was a nonpartisan, nonprofit website that presents research,
studies, and pro and con statements related to vegetarianism. References that were in the form
of numbers next to the statement or fact and once you clicked on them it would take you to the

page with the list of references. This source was also updated last on January 15th, 2015, which
also gave me a clue that this source is credible.

"Vegetarianism and Religion." Vegetarianism and Religion. Web. 20 Feb. 2015.

<http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~soa29/Religious Issues.htm>.
Vegetarianism and Religion is an article that focuses on the relationship between
vegetarianism and religion. The article talks about six religions which are Hinduism, Jainism,
Buddhism, Taoism, Judaism, and Christianity. The article summarizes the relationship of
vegetarianism to each religion. It gives brief descriptions and information about the relationship.
I believe that this article can help me throughout my process of finalizing my final
project. Religion is something that I did not have in mind at the start of my inquiry project. After
researching and reading this article I am more aware of the relationship of religion and
vegetarianism. Reading that some religions like Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism are strongly
linked to vegetarianism was new and interesting to me.
One way that I know this source is credible is because the website ends with .edu
which shows that this is an educational website and that it is reliable. In the bottom of the
website one of the tabs is a reference tab which allows me to see where the information came
from. Throughout the article it had quotes from books and in the section about Judaism it had
quotes from scripture.
