Helena or Hermia?

In the Midsummer Nights Dream, the two characters, Helena and Hermia have
many differences and similarities. These two young pretty ladies, only in their teens, are
childhood friends, but they are sometimes envious to one another. Hermia is told to be
short and dark skinned while Helena is tall and slim. They both are from Athens and
they both aim to be with the man they love. I think Hermia is better out of the two
characters because she is good at fighting for what she wants. In addition she is also
very confident and strong.
The daughter of Egeus, Hermia, is forced to marry a man she doesnt like. Her
dad chose Demetrius for her. But, instead Hermia runs away with her true love,
Lysander. After they both fall asleep, she wakes up discovering that Lysander
disappeared. She then follows the voice of Lysander through the woods and sees that
Helena has won his heart. Thinking Helena was to blame, she fights for Lysander even
though it may cause a broken friendship In act 3 scene 2 Hermia states, O me you
juggler! You canker-blossom! You thief of love! What, have you come by night and
stolen my loves heart from him?
This example shows that, Hermia will always be by Lysanders side no matter
what happens. Even if she has to disobey her father, get killed, or even ruin a
friendship, she knows who she loves and she will never let go.
On the other hand, Helena had no one. No one loved her. She liked Demetrius
but he didnt return her feelings. But after the flower squirting incident, Demetrius and
Lysander both ended up falling in love with her.. She became foolish over love and is
always self-pitying. Even though she thinks they are mocking her, she tells Demetrius
and Lysander to protect her from Hermia. By now, Hermia is outraged. Hermia realizes
that Helena is taking advantage of them. So, she stands up for Lysander till the end. In
Act 3, Scene 2 she states,
" Little again! Nothing but low and little! Why will you suffer her to flout me
thus? Let me come to her.
She wants nothing to do with Helena but just wants Lysander by her side again.
You can tell how much she loves him.Hermia is relentless and she will fight for her true
love.
In conclusion, Hermia and Helena are both very stubborn, but Hermia is more
confident in who she really loves. Helena can be very sensitive at times and blinded by
love. Moreover, Hermia is strong and she will never surrender Lysander because he is
the one she chose to be with from the start. When Lysander suddenly fell in love with
Helena, it made Hermia infuriated. She fought her childhood friend just for him. Both of
the characters, Helena and Hermia want to be with the people they love but, love can
be a very dangerous thing. They are both determined for love and it made them go
berserk. In the end, Hermia did what she could for Lysander. She stood up for him,
fought for him, and got into a cat fight for him.
