4. OBJECTIVES (10 points)

Students in the 1st grade will demonstrate their knowledge on use of water
orally with 95% accuracy.
Science Standard
2.b. Students know both plants and animals need water, animals need food,
and plants need light.

Scientific Skills
1. ClassificationStudents will be able to classify various use for water. They
will also classify if the example is for a person, plant, or animal.
2. ObservationsStudents will observe peers acting out an example of use for
water.
3. Communication--Communication skills will be developed as students play the
aqua charades game and act out their example.

5. ANTICIPATORY SET (5 points)

First we will read the story What Can You Do with Water? By Marcia S. Freeman.
Then we will play the game Aqua Charades. Although we are discussing examples of
how water can be used students will also be able to act out their examples with
provides a fun and active way of learning.

6. ASSESSMENT (10 points)

I will be completing an informal assessment by observing students participation, ability to
provide examples, and answer questions. I will record my observations and place them in
the students portfolio.

7.

PURPOSE (5 points)

This activity helps students practice the standard 2.b. It is crucial that students are
given several opportunities to practice each standard to ensure they grasp the concept
before moving on to the next grade level. This lesson provides a fun and active way to
learn standard 2.b.

GUIDED DISCOVERY LESSON BODY

(20 points)

Procedure/Steps to follow:
The introductory activity/advance organizer includes stories and poems
Read book What Can You Do With Water?
Ask children to think of ways that they and other people use water.
Encourage them to take turns sharing their ideas. When a child

mentions a use, ask him or her to act it out and have everyone else
copy the motion. After the charade, write the water use on the paper
labeled People and illustrate with a simple drawing. Children may
think of things like drinking, taking a bath, brushing teeth, cooking,
swimming, or playing. If students are stuck on ideas I will act one out
and have them guess what it is and have them copy my motion.
Review the list of uses. Which of the uses are important for our health?
Which are just for fun? Are there any uses you would be willing to
give up?
Repeat step 2 for animals and plants. In the case of animals children
may think of things like drinking, swimming, bathing, or water as a
home for fish and other aquatic animals. For plants, you may need to
provide examples such as water holding up plants (plants droop or
wilt if they dont have enough water) and water dispersing plant seeds.
Repeat step 3 for animals and plants lists.

CLOSURE

(5 points)

Who can remind us what we have learned about water use today?

Those were all great examples! As we can see on our charts that we have created,
there are many important uses of water. Also we have learned that water is a
means of survival for human, plants, and animals.

10. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

11.

(5 points)

Assign work that is to be done without your help, such as homework.

Assignment must be valuable in supporting the learning stated in the objective.
How will this assignment be assessed?
Who will check it for accuracy?
Where will the assignment be placed? Will it be a part of a journal, a portfolio,
on display on the bulletin board, etc.? You must have a plan.

MODIFICATION /DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION (10 points)

How will you meet the learning needs of all students in the group? Provide specific
strategies that might be used for each type of learner.
Students will be given a homework assignment. They will create a tri-fold out of
white paper and label each column humans, plants, animals. Students will then draw
examples of water use for each category. When completed I will check for accuracy. I
will then display their work on a bulletin board in the classroom.
Modifications for Advanced Learner- Write complete sentences on back of each
column explaining their drawing of examples.

Revised 08-27-09

Modifications for IEP Student- Less examples needed.

Modifications for Second Language Learner- Translation of examples.

12.

RE-TEACHING OR REMEDIAL

(5 points)

On due date for homework assignment I will place students into small groups. They will
then be asked to share their drawings with one another and discuss the examples.
