Photosynthesis Lesson

Grade Level: 3rd

- Word Sort (Parts, Habitat, Survival)
- Silent reading article Parts of Flower(6 copies, teacher + 5 students)
- Celery
- Water
- Cup
- Food Coloring
- Parts of flower project
- Photosynthesis Worksheet

Common Core Standards
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding
of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.7 Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps,
photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text
(e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).
L.OL.03.31 Describe the function of the following plant parts: flower, stem, root, and
leaf.
Lesson Specific Objectives
- Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of information on silent
reading article and through photosynthesis diagram by using examples.
- Students will complete a word sort by using terms of a Black-Eyed Susans
habitat, parts, and survival techniques.
- Students will complete flower project by labeling parts and telling what they
do.
Introduction/Anticipatory Set
- Students will review what we talked about last week (habitat of Black Eyed
Susan)
- Students will be introduced to celery experiment and put together the
experiment and set aside. It will be looked at, at the end of class.

Procedure:
Celery Activity
- Students will look at how a stem sucks up water. This will be modeled by
celery stalk, water, and food coloring.
- Students will prepare at the beginning of class and look at it at end.
Silent Reading

I will have an article about the plant and the functions of the parts for the
students to read silently.
I will have a list of questions to answer about the parts of the plant at the end
to review.

Word Sort
- I will give students 20 words to be sorted into groups. They must discuss why
the words belong to which categories and what the categories are.
- If the students did not have the same categories I had in mind I will then have
them sort the words into categories I have picked out.
- Students will then record the words into their word logs
Photosynthesis Diagram
- Students will be given a diagram of photosynthesis.
- We will discuss how this is the process that plants make energy.
- Students will be able to tell me the steps/process of photosynthesis
- Students will record new vocabulary on word wall
Flower Project
- To futher students learning about the parts of the plant and their functions
students will create their own Black Eyed Susan.
- This will include the plant, multiple flowers, stalks, leaves, petals, and roots
- These flowers will be used on the presentation poster
Word Wall
- Biennial- Plant blooms in its second year and dies shortly after.
- Pioneer- The Black Eyed Susan is a competitive plant and will push other
plants out of the area. This is called being a pioneer plant.
Learning Log
Students will write in their learning logs four sentences about the Black Eyed
Susan.
- Students must write in complete sentences using a capital letter and
punctuation.
- Students will have a chance to read their four sentences if they so desire.
Closure
- Students will look at celery stick
- Students will fill out an exit ticket
- Students will write about one thing they liked in lesson
Assessment
- Students will be assessed on if they used the article as a base for finding the
answers to their questions
- Students will be assessed on if they could complete writing four sentences
pertaining to the Black Eyed Susan using information learned in todays
lesson.
- Students will be assessed on if they completed and had accurate information
on plant activity

Adaptations for Diverse and/or Special Needs


- One of the students, has a learning disability. She will be sat close to me so if
she is having difficulty reading I can help her.
- Another student, is blind in one eye. He will be sat on the other side of me,
close as well so he can see the materials I am showing.
