Vignette 1: Writing Log

You never realize how much your writing style changes when you go from class
to class, or even with a different audience. I kept a log on the writing that I have done for
the past four days, and if it werent for my name you would not be able to tell that they
were all written by me.
This is a portion of the notes I took in my Liberal Studies class.

The History of Sexuality in America Since 1900

Sex the quality of being male or female.

Sexuality the quality of being sexual.
Gender Cultural distinctions between sexes
o Cultural Construct culturally shaped learning
o Cultural Relativism Taking a culture from the past or present on their own
terms.
Patriarchy
o A social system in which the role of the male is the primary authority figure
o Power and resources passed from fathers to sons, with women and children as
legal dependents of the male leader.
o Land, Inheritance, & Honor
Native Populations at Colonization
o Examples of Matriarchal Societies
o Blurred Gender Lines
Introduction of Slavery in Americas
o Community Rearing of Children
o Admiration of Motherhood

With my journal entries, I have come to the conclusion that almost seventy-five
percent of my writing is some form of short hand, whether it be txt talk, or

abbreviations. Only about twenty-five percent of my writing is where I actually take my

time and write something out that would be worth turning in for a grade. With the speed
of these teachers and the rate of their lectures, you are almost forced to write some type
of short hand.
My stats class is where I use short hand writing the most. My professor cannot
write, his words run together and it looks like just a bunch of scribble marks. So I must
listen as he is saying it and take the notes that way. I have to use abbreviations and
signs so I dont fall behind. However going from there to my Liberal Studies class, I saw
my style of writing change dramatically. I am not rushed in my Liberal studies class so I
have time to copy down all the information word for word.
All form of our writing influence us, for instance, have you ever been writing a
paper for a portfolio and wrote something like you would text it? I sure have, instead of
saying alright I typed Ight. With these habits we need to be careful, especially when
its a formal paper.
I believe having different types of writing is beneficial, you can make yourself look
good by writing a formal letter for your professors, and also write something that helps
you connect with others just by tweaking your writing style. In the past four days I have
seen a variety of my writing styles, and they all have their purposes but you must be
careful to not let the different styles run together.
