Subject & Topic: Science 13-1 Motion

Page: 407

Date: 1/23/14
Time Required: 40 mins

Standards:
12.D.2a Explain constant, variable, and periodic motions.
Measurable Educational Learning Objectives:

The students will understand that the motion of objects can be described
and measured.
The students will know that an object may move in a straight line at a
constant speed, speed up, slow down, or change direction, dependent on
the net force acting on the object.

Assessment:
Exit slip: Name one type of motion and an example of it.
How do you find the average speed of an object?
Adaptations and Accommodations:
Using multiple platforms to present material: projector, book, and oral
instruction.
Resources:
Science book, Lesson 1 review worksheet, projector
Prerequisite Skills:
None
Academic Language:
Average speed, Motion, Periodic Motion, Constant Motion, Variable Motion,
Velocity
Anticipatory Set:
Review of the concept of motion, periodic motion, constant motion, and
variable motion, with examples of each one.
Statement of Objective or Purpose:

Today we will review different types of motion, as well as learn how to

describe and measure motion using concepts such as a reference point,
average speed, and velocity.

Sequence of Activities:

Review types of motion.

Read paragraph about points of reference.
Explain points of reference and ask questions to check for understanding.
Read paragraph about average speed and velocity.
Explain the formula for average speed. Differentiate between average
speed and velocity.
Do sample problems to calculate average speed.
Do exit slip.
Assign homework Lesson 1 Review worksheet.

Questions to ask:

What is a point of reference?

How would you differentiate between average speed and velocity?
Robert moved 28 meters in 4 seconds. What was his average speed?
What would you need to know to know his velocity?

Conclusion and Summary:

Today we reviewed different types of motion and learned about average
speed and velocity. Please take out a piece of paper and answer these two
questions: Name one type of motion and an example of it. How do you find
the average speed of an object?
Self Evaluation and Reflection:
I felt like I was able to more confidently present the science curriculum today.
The lesson went well, and after reviewing the exit slips, I could tell that many
students were grasping the concepts that were taught. I felt less pressure
when asked questions that took more of an explanation. I feel that with
science, it is very important for me to review the material and come up with
viable examples for the students to understand concepts.
