Detailed study on Design Magazines

Both made by Imagine Publishing

Advanced Photoshop; Photoshop Creative: magazines dedicated to involving themselves in the realm
of Photoshop CC to CS5. Analysing the magazines you can identify that it is with a high age group
(18-40), or one who is in University/ Higher Education, I think this is true due to numerous factors
within the website alone, to begin: the use of professional colours: black and white, these basic
contrasted colours are used mainly with business type magazine and upper class ones, you would
find black and white on a childs magazine: as a childs one is all about cartoon graphics and bright
colours. The next factor is the use of broad layouts, what I mean by this is that how the text is
presented is very blocky and straight, which can relate to an older audience as this is how
professional magazines are presented. Unlike younger audience magazines: where the text is
everywhere, and WILD.
Going onto the subject of Gender, for a design magazine, it would not appeal more to either genders
as this magazine is about creative minds, furthermore, I can prove it by just looking at the colours: if
the magazine was gender specific or had more interest in one than the other, the colours would relate
to that: say red/ blue: these common colours are related to the male gender however, pink/ lighter
colours would appeal more to female: this study is due to common stereotypes of genders.
In the idea of socio-economic grouping, by analysing the use of language and form of these
magazines, we can identify that the use of language and form relates to people at or above C class
which goes around professional designers, to managerial Status in A. However, I would say that this
magazine is around C class more as these are designers and not managers: as well as the
magazines being around 5.99, which is relatively expensive compared to people close to a lower rank,
school students, low end workers etc. Furthermore, the reason I choose C class is because I have to
further understand the income people like designers and College students, as they both mainly go into
part time/ full-time work, however for different reasons. This can be related here:
http://www.prospects.ac.uk/graphic_designer_salary.htm as it explains in detail that for people at
around college to junior designer, they are looking at around 15k to 19k per annum, so taking that into
consideration, if you are in that position, with very little money to spend on luxury items, this depends
on how much your place of living is, then you are going to want to/ need to buy things cheaper than
normal. So that is why I say around C-Class, where they can earn an average living but can still have
some struggles.
In the sense of lifestyle, you can depict that these types of people would have a work based lifestyle:
with a flat. Or something close like that. Their life would be work based as they would usually be in a
grouped office with other designers around them.
Audience figures

In relation to my magazine: we can expect that my circulation will be around 41,000, however it is
likely to be a lot less than that as it is a magazine just starting out, so the that depends on where we
distribute and how much we can, it would start very small unless a bigger publishing business:
Imagine Publishing was to do so. In order to reach the power that this magazine has, I would have to
advertise as much as possible in the most mainstream areas: TV, EDUCATION, INTERNET SITES,
as these three would give the biggest head-turners. Furthermore, my magazine would have to have a
USP in order to be popular, so to keep it up with my competitors, it will distribute on a 4-week basis as
well as the magazine relating to lower end designers, instead of the mainstream artists that adv.pho
does.

Marketing
In the sense of marketing, there should be more magazines like this: as there is still a limited amount
of variety for these magazines: as well as a variety of development. Distributing my magazine would
help the limited magazines grow and may even help produce more.
With digital magazines at the moment there are a few things that you can notice: A, is the limited
amount of magazine that are based around digital designs in the UK alone. Currently in the UK,
personally I have only seen only four magazines that are somewhat based on graphical design, all
made by Imagine Publishing: Advanced Photoshop, Digital Photographer, 3D Artist and Photoshop
Creative. To put simply, my new magazine can easily join in with the little group, as it cannot be
hidden by the obviously 'large' variety of them. This is a very niche market, as it a more sparse
population of possibly interested readers than say the Gaming franchise, as the gaming franchise is a
heavily dense crowd, because anyone can be part of it, but a graphic-based magazine is a lot more
sparse as it is only a selected few people who would be fond of a Graphical magazine.
I.D. is another magazine that can relate to my one, as it goes through the same concept: to be a
graphical magazine as well as representing Adobe Products as well. The current circulation for this
magazine can be found here: http://www.mediaweek.co.uk/article/1164922/vice-acquires-style-bible-id-magazine at an annual distribution of 89,000 in the UK. They are popular because of their much
more in-depth reviews on Adobe products as well as interviews on some of the employees at the
branch, furthermore, they are able to obtain much more exclusive content which informs readers of
much more secretive upcoming plug-ins for current: popular programs such as: Adobe products and
MODO (3D Design Tool).
Another competitor is DigitalArts magazine. With a circulation of 15,000,
http://www.magazinesabout.co.uk/magazines/view/Digital+Arts, this magazine is a fair contestant in
the world of digital design magazines. The one reason why it sells so well is because of one thing that
RGB does not supply: it is an online magazine. What that means is that it is not distributed as also a
physical copy, but purely a digital magazine, which presents all of its content on the online website.
There are benefits and easy reasons why this would be a good contestant, as it is much easier to
obtain the magazine, and there can be animations and videos in the digital magazine, as well as it
being cheaper, because you can remove publishing and delivery costs to licensed shops.
Timescale
With timescale in the sense of a location shoot, I will be using the studio in The Henley College, just
for the front cover of the magazine: to make it appealing: everything else will be found via licence free
photographs and facts found at good sources from the web.

Relevant Legislation to follow

All in all, I aim to make my magazine treat everyone fairly and equally. To do so, I must ensure that
any information given out about someone has been verified by the person, so to withdraw any idea of
privacy issues, this also connects with the use of defamation, where we can also verify that there isnt
any information that can insult the person we are reviewing. Furthermore, to ensure that there is no
discrimination on race or gender, we will review people regardless of gender or race and with a fair
review. Lastly, legal issues: to avoid that, we will be using license free images, usually stock, so we
can avoid any issues of copyright law.
Team Members involved

With my project, I will just be producing it alone, even though I could get the help
from others, I do not have a big enough trust for anyone local to assist me in my
magazine project as it always seems to fail, with people not doing some work
that they should of done. Overall, I will be completing this by myself, as I believe
this is the best decision in order to be sure that everything is complete by the
end.
Health and safety
All health and safety issues are in the risk assessment sheet.
Programme Design Format
For my magazine, it will be on Weebly as well as it being printed once. It will be
a formal magazine with some relatively comic writing.
Potential Issues and solutions
