MODEL LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Topic, class, and level __Social Studies, Africa, First Grade_________________


Date for implementation: March 30th, 2015
Conceptual Framework: To what important concept, essential question, enduring
understanding, or big idea in the discipline does this lesson connect?

Students will understand and be able to revisit facts about the Rainforest as part of
their study about Africa

Standards: MA, Common Core, WIDA or other Standards for this lesson or unit:
Grade 1 Informational Reading Standard 2: Identify the main topic and retell key details
of a text.
Knowledge/Understandings: What should the students know and understand at
the end of this lesson?
o Students will understand key details about the Rainforest region in Africa
Skills: What will the students be able to do when this lesson is over?
o SWBAT identify in writing facts about the rainforest based off of a
reading on the rug
o SWBAT write facts in complete sentences with proper grammar rules
Assessment. How will you check for student achievement and understanding?

Students will show me their facts as it is written and have it checked by a teacher.

Materials, preparation, and/or on-line resources to be used: Africa Packet:
Habitats of Africa- The Rainforest, pencil, crayons, Rainforest informational
reading page
Hook: What question or activity might spark student curiosity and motivation?
Friends, we are going to keep working on our Africa packets today and
learn more about another region of Africa. Come join me on the rug where
we are going to read more about the Rainforest and then you are going to
continue in your packets.

Activities: What question/s might encourage the student to explore and discover
the content? What will happen during the body of the lesson?
Activity 1: Whole Group Read
o We will read a page about the rainforest and then talk about some
facts we learned together.
Activity 2: Individual Practice
o Now you are going to return to your seats.
o Open to the page Rainforest Habitat
o Write two facts and draw a picture. Make sure you include capital
letters, periods, complete sentences and all the words from our
word wall are spelled correctly.
o I will circulate around the room as they work keeping track as they
work.
Activity 3: Recap
o We learned about another region in Africa today, tomorrow we are
going to start reviewing the different regions we have learned
about by sorting animals.
Differentiation including SEI Considerations (key vocabulary,
language/content objectives, etc.):
I go over facts and write some as we talk about them on the board as a
tool to help the students who wont remember.
I will circulate and guide students through their writing as needed.
Grouping: If you are grouping at some point during the lesson, why are you
grouping? How are you grouping?
It is a whole group/individual read
Sponge activity: (to soak up extra time)
Students will pack up to go home for dismissal
Homework when appropriate:
Homework will be included in the weekly homework packet that gets sent
home on Monday
Wrap-up: How will you help students make meaning from the lessons
activities?
We have learned so much about Africa so far first graders; tomorrow we
are going to continue our work on Africa. We are going to talk about
animals and sort them based on what regions they are from!
Potential Pitfalls and Reflection: What difficulties can you predict (or did you discover
as you taught) that your students may find challenging or have misconceptions about?
How will you address those confusions?

Some students will need more 1-1 help with their writing and it might take
them the whole time to do their facts.
