Dependency." USA

The articles title is Smart Phone Dependency: a

growing obsession with gadgets. Which caught
my attention to begin with, and as I read there
were 3 major statements that caught my eye.
The first was the Opening statement You gave
it a pet name. It knows more about you then
your mom does. Sometimes you even sleep
with it. These opening lines are what really
drew me in to read more. I love the idea of
opening the article this way. The second section
that caught my eye which really gave me the
idea of doing primary research was the short
story about Michelle Hackman and her science
project. I read that story and thought of things
that I could ask college students to help shed
some light on a topic that isnt discussed
enough. A brief line about Michelles project is
that she discovered that students separated
from their phones were under under-stimulateda lower heart rate was the indicator- and lacked
the ability to entertain themselves. The third
part that really caught my eye was the
discussion with Michael Breus, a psychologist
and sleep expert. He says that many of his
patients often use their phones while winding
down at night and it is causing them to have
this problem with not being able to disconnect.
He says the number one compliant is that I
cant turn my mind off and fall asleep. This
really stuck me as something that I want to
know more about.

This opening
statement is
great and I love
the way it draws
in readers like
myself. As I read
this I want to
catch my
readers
attention in a
similar matter I
just need to
figure out how
to be cleaver
like this.
Michelle
Hackmans story
was good too in
a reason to
discover what
effects mobile
devices have on
our long term
effect to our
minds.

This article discusses ways to monitor your cell

phone usage. The initial question was how
many times a day do you check your smart
phone? Which to me is something that no one
ever thinks about. The article talks about
various apps used to check how many times
and how often you check your phone. Apps like
Moment which tracks how many minutes you
spend on your phone each day along with how
many times you inlock it. Moment cost $4.99,
and a man named Kevin Holesh came back with
numbers saying he spent an average of about
an hour and 30mins on his phone on a single
day. This stat along with another really jumped
out at me. The other stat was the average taken
on how much time we spend a month on our
phone..the result 30 hours a month on our
phones and to me that is crazy. A simple add
called checky can just count how many times
you unlock your phone and its free. Checky is a
start on trying to monitor cell phone usage
This article highlighted a few positives of our
mobile device which is the real meaning of
bringing these technologies about. Yes as
mention in the Article technology has enable
us to keep in contact with old friends,
colleagues, and co-workers. Brittany does
discuss negative effects of social media. She
talks about the social awkwardness created
when people are at public events. Brittany talks
about the role that technology plays in her life
directly and she finds at times it is rather
difficult to engage in conversation with friends
without the use technology. Brittany ends the
article in a short of challenge to us as readers.
She asked us if we can raise above the norm
and take our eyes away from our screens and
look around to see whats really happening in
our lives. I am accepting her challenge and I
hope you will do the same.

People dont say

This article talks about addiction signs and how

to classify yourself if you are an addict. Towards
the end it talks about ten signs that classify
addicts. If you say yes to more than half I would
be alarmed, (my opinion). A big stat that
caught my attention was 61% of respondents
in the survey said they regularly sleep with their
cell or smartphone turned on under their pillow
or next to their bed, and more than 50% feel
uncomfortable when they leave their
smartphone at home or in the car, or when they
have no service or their phone is broken. (Dr.
David Greenfield). There is a test that the
Article offers threw the center for internet and
technology addiction. I took the test myself and
scored a 6 out of 15 which is pretty good. The
test is designed to identify addicts. Dr.
Greenfield created the test.

Threw my interviews I have discovered a few

major points that I feel are strong arguments for

I agreed with
these 10 signs

This is one of
the truest
statements read
in the article
and I want to

Breus talked

a later discussion. But heres one point that

really stood out in my interviews. So far out of
10 interviews 8 people sleep with their phone
right next to them at night. People are either
placing their phones under there pillows on
next to them on a night stand or even just right
in their hands. I knew this number would have
been high and somewhere around there but It
seeing how people sleep with them that close.
Many people talked about how they scrolled
through their feed before falling asleep and It
was a nice way to relax at home. I took this
point on one interview, and ran with it. I asked
the client if she felt she needed to at night or
was it something that wasnt a big deal. And as
I continued the conversation with her she said
that when she was out and about outside of her
house she tend to be stressed and she would
then retreat to her phone. This I felt was big
because it was a stress reliever which she
heavily depended on. She would check her
phone before class when there wasnt a lot of
people around because she wanted to keep
occupied.
In my interviews I asked a series of questions at
the end in which the client answered either 5
being the most stressful or 1 being not a worry. I
asked simple question like forgetting a coat in
the morning or running late to class and the
responses varied. Normal but when asked about
trying to send texts without service the average
answer was a 4, something in which was a
worry but not the biggest worry. I ran with this
on a few interviews in which I asked do you
feel like youre pre-occupied in sending that
message to miss what is right in front of you?
and everyone agreed to that. Everyone was
caught up in sending the message that the
moment was missed. People compared sending
that message was as stressful as running late to
class and some even more stressful then that.
The average score for running late to class was
a 3.8. Sending a message on our phone fell
around a 4.1. Shocking to me but the truth for
some. I had one interviewee who questioned
me when I ask him about sending the text and
not having service, he questioned the
importance of the text and he was the only
person to ask such a question. Every other

fact I abstracted
from my
interviews.
When first
approaching the
whole process I
was a little
skeptical with
what I was
\going to find
and encounter.
Now I am very
lose with the
process and I
want to
interview a lot
more people to
help support my
argument.

I am going to
keep
interviewing
people up to the
point where I
can prove my
point strongly. I
want to take
away the ending
here on this
section because
the point where
someone
actually stop
and back fed my
question made
me really
passionate and
wanted to
discover more
because people
really do see an
issue just no
way to fix it just
yet.

person would give me a 4 or 5 and tell me how
stressful it was and how they hated when that

am going to re-read the question and you pick
whats best. I which he didhe picked a 2.

In this article I read about various health risks

caused by using our smart phones. These conditions
include brain fog, chronic fatigue, eye stain,
memory lapse, depression, and many others.
The article talks about the young are picking up
the smartphones at even earlier ages. Who to
blame you may ask and I point the fingers at the
adults who are allowing their kids to pick it up In the
first place. Since children are seeing adults on such
devices they want to and begin to since we are so
distracted by these devices ourselves. There is not
enough research yet but in a few years I believe
there is going to be an issue in child development
and the cause being lack of exercise among young
kids.

This article is directed towards my power point and

my pamphlet. It talks about a lot of major points that
I am going to over view them.

Nomophobia- No-mobile-phone-phobia

Direct Quotes:
According to this study, nearly 53 per cent of
mobile phone users in Britain tend to be anxious
when they lose their mobile phone, run out of
battery or credit, or have no network coverage.
Symptoms include being unable to turn off your
phone, obsessively checking your phone, and
constantly topping up the battery.
********Worst affected are 18 to 24-year-olds - 77
per cent are unable to stay away from their phone
for more than a few minutes.****** MY TARGET
AUDIENCE****
Phantom Vibration Syndrome- when you believe your
phone is vibrating and it really isnt.
Cyber Sickness- A motion sickness that is caused by
our minds thinking that we are still moving when we
arent. This is often referred to when someone says
they have a headache and feel like the room is
spinning
Text Claw- A feeling of cramping soreness in the
forearms wrist and fingers.
iPosture- When you slump while using your devices.
Dry Eyed Syndrome- the feeling your eyes get when
you stare at a screen to hard.

Facts that will be

used in the
Brochure.
These are straight
definitions and
quotes I am going
to use in order to
prove health
reason why we
need to be more
aware of the
amount of time
we use our mobile
devices.
There are other
symptoms of over

ones I wanted to

A False Sense of Connection:
Direct Quote
According to Cornell University's Steven Strogatz, social media
sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the
meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the
numerous casual relationships formed through social media.

Cyber-Bulling: A second negative effect on society

and individuals is illustrated in this section where
Brian the author talks about how deep mental
scares are left in people who are bullied through
social media.
Decreased Productivity: Especially when at work.
Workers tend to be interested in what people are
posting then their daily task at hand. Social media is
distracting us in more places than just work.
Privacy: The article talks about how employers using
social media sights to background checks on
possible employees and even though the account
states private doesnt mean it is strongly affective.

FOMO is normal feeling of anticipatory regret from

time to time.
Issue with being a FOMO is that we let the fear

which is mainly caused be social media.
FOMO is a modern take on the grass being greener
