FAIR USE OF THIS REPORT

A single visit by a Practicum Consultant can provide only a snapshot of a Teacher Candidates
performance. A Practicum Consultant is able to comment on some but not all the categories listed
below.
To gauge a Candidates performance and potential fairly, this report should be read in conjunction
with Associate Teachers reports and other information the Candidate may make available.

Teaching Assignment Observed: Grade, subject area, size of class, setting (e.g., gym, art room, science lab).
Science Grade 6/7, Classroom setting
1)

Personal Attributes: Does the Teacher Candidate appear to possess attributes likely to make for success as a
teachere.g., commitment, enthusiasm, positive attitude, interest in and respect for students, ability to reflect
critically on self, willingness to work hard?
Ashley presents herself as a mature, energetic, highly organized, beginning teacher. Her associate teacher says her
enthusiasm is unbridled. She remains after school to assist with the Math Club.

2)

Content Area Background & Knowledge: Did the Teacher Candidate appear to have a good knowledge of the
subject matter and an ability to convey that understanding to students?
Ashley, through her questions and comments demonstrated solid knowledge regarding ecosystems of the
environment. While her degree is not in science her associate teacher says she has spent much time researching for
this unit.

3)

Organization & Preparation: Were written plans complete, coherent, & prepared ahead of time? Were materials
prepared before class? Did learning activities match learning expectations?

Ashley prepared a student work chart to record research, had the smart board ready with the goal of the
lesson and written instructions projecting. Student IPads were procured from storage and were ready for
student use. A lesson plan was followed using the headings, overall expectations, specific expectations,
lesson/activities and materials.

4)

Teaching Effectiveness: Did the Teacher Candidate use teaching strategies appropriate to the level, ability, &
interests of students? Was he or she able to provide for individual differences?
Ashley started the lesson by asking the students to describe changes that were occurring in their mini ecosystems built
last week. She then clearly explained the goal of today's class verbally and then displayed it along with the lesson
instructions on the Smartboard. Students work in groups using IPads and during different points during research she
would remind them of how much time was left. She effectively used positive reinforcement to keep students focused
on their work and her lesson (thank you Reese, very creative group, I liked the way, good work).

.
5)

seem interested in individual students and able to work effectively with either groups or one-on-one?
Ashley treats her class with empathy, warmth and respect.

6)

Communication: Did the Teacher Candidate speak and write the language of instruction at an appropriate level? Did
he or she speak with appropriate volume, vocabulary, and expression so as to be readily understood by students?
Ashley's voice was clear when she addressed the whole class. She varied the tone of her voice to emphasize different
elements in her lesson. She always waited until she had the classes or an individual students attention before speaking.

7)

Classroom Management: Did the Teacher Candidate maintain student interest throughout the lesson? Did he or she
handle routines efficiently, deal effectively with inappropriate behaviours, and generally maintain an atmosphere
conducive to learning?
The class quickly and quietly transitioned from French to Science. Ashley asked for observations on the ecosystems
they had developed under her leadership. She called on a number of students who all had their hands raised. She
called on students by their name. When students began group research she moved throughout the class assisting
groups. Students were on task and motivated. She redirected them to remember to use different search questions
