Science Lesson 3
For this assignment, students are expected to look at the moon and monitor its different
phases. This project will be introduced before to introduce a unit on space and the sky. Each day,
the class will review the moon charts. In addition, the class will hand in their moon charts each
day, with the exception of Fridays, to ensure completion. When reviewing the moon chart, students
will discuss what they believe the moon looked like the night before. We would then, as a class,
discuss what phase the moon was in and, when the opportunity presents itself, discuss what
warrants a change from a phase (full moon to waning gibbous, for example). Our class will also
have a chart that we will use together to track the changes in the moon as we see them. Students
will be given access to websites to help track the moon if they are unable to see it due to clouds.
However, weather patterns are required daily to ensure students are actually getting out of their
rooms to look at the sky. Lastly, an extra credit option will be given in which students will be
asked to chart some of the star formations they see in the sky.
Objectives:

Students will be able to describe each respective moon phase.

Students will be able to predict what the moon will look like each night.

Students will be able to compare and contrast two different moons.

Moon Chart Assignment:

Hello, scientists! Have you ever noticed that sometimes the moon is completely white,
and sometimes there is no moon at all? Well, for the next thirty days, we are going to
explore this phenomenon and study the different shapes of the moon!
For the next 30 days, you will be expected to go outside and observe the moon. What
does it look like? Draw what you see. In addition, you must write what the weather is like
on each respective night.
Follow this example as a reference:
Day One:

Weather: cool, windy,

not many clouds

This assignment will be due on date. If the
weather makes it impossible to see the moon, you can

use the internet or newspapers to get the required data. Still, note this on your moon chart
under the weather!
Questions at the end of the packet will be answered once the moon chart is completed.
For extra credit: include some interesting star formations on the chart!
