In this activity, you will make a stock solution, calculate its molarity, and then perform dilutions.
Procedure:
1. Create a 100.0 mL solution of 0.15 M Kool-Aid (M1). Assume that Kool-Aid is 100% sucrose
(C12H22O11) to simplify your calculations. Remember to follow the procedure taught in
class to create a MOLAR solution.
a. Calculate the amount of grams of Kool-Aid solute needed:
b.
2.
Pour one inch of this solution into a small test tube and label it Stock.
3.
Pour the rest into a beaker and SAVE as Stock. Youll use this to make more dilute solutions in steps 5 and 6.
4.
5.
Dilution #1: Use your volumetric flask to make 100.0 mL (V2) of a 0.0600 M (M2) solution. To do this, you will need
to calculate the volume of stock solution to be diluted (V1).
Include both algebra and a sentence to describe your dilution.
*Pour one inch of your dilution #1 into a small test tube. Label and save this in your test tube rack. Discard the rest.
6.
Dilution #2: This time, make 100.0mL of a 0.0200M solution. Start with the stock solution.
Include both algebra and a sentence to describe your dilution.
*Pour one inch of dilution #2 into a small test tube. Label and save this in your test tube rack. Discard the rest.
7. Look at the three solutions you made today. Which one contains the most solute? ___________ The least? ____________
8. How many grams of Kool-Aid would you have to use to make 10.0 Liters of your most dilute solution?
