CONTENT

Students will:
Discuss their opinions on particular issues
Express and justify their opinion effectively offering supporting evidence
Present an opinion linking ideas effectively
Listen to the ideas and opinions of others
Attempt to persuade others to another point of view, providing supporting
evidence
Engage in group discussion with greater student autonomy
Ask questions to clarify others point of view
Clarify comments by rephrasing
Express ideas and opinions without dominating the group discussion
Speak clearly using an appropriate pace, volume and intonation
Use strategies like gesture, facial expression and tone of the voice to
engage the listeners
Recognise and use the organisational structure of an exposition

Links with other KLAs


This program will be implemented in conjunction with many aspects of learning from
other KLAs. The learning content links with the following KLAs;

H ENGLISH: Reading and Responding and Writing and Representing:


researching content and writing presentation.

H HSIE: Presentations will be based on this terms unit Rainforests


H SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY: Students will use multimedia technologies and
different computer generated special effects to enhance presentations.

H MATHEMATICS: Students will need to time their presentations as well as


apply problem solving strategies if difficulties arise.

H CAPA: implementing and applying visual elements and applying creativity to


capture audiences.

Learning Intentions
D Students will learn and be able to:

Plan, rehearse and make adjustments to oral presentations for specific


purposes and audiences.

Use multimedia to enhance meaning when communicating ideas and


information to others.

Engage an audience when making oral presentations by using strategies


such as facial expression, gesture, pause and repetition.

Enhance presentations using some basic oral presentation strategies


such as using notes, prompt cards, voice projection and volume changes
for emphasis.

Lesson

Teaching and Learning Task


Watch a number of different reports on Rainforests,
(show good and bad) so chn can begin to recognise a
GOOD news report. Encourage chn to pay attention to
and write down the elements they felt were most
effective. A Venn diagram could be used here.
As a class, begin to compile aspects, features and
elements of a good news report.

(OPTIONAL: ask a volunteer to read the text to the class


as a news reporter)

As a class deconstruct The Red Sea. May be linked


to Comprehension- weekly strategy.
Discuss the structure and content to identify the
overall message as well as the main idea for each
paragraph. Highlight elements in the report that
identify it as an informative text; topical paragraphs
containing factual information and technical
vocabulary. Chn can complete Red Sea worksheet.

Rainforest RESEARCH

In pairs, students are given a Rainforest to research. Report


Pairs may also be given specific areas to research
Proforma
this will help to eliminate having ten very similar
reports; remember well be watching them.
Stop watches
Students may use a report proforma to help select
appropriate content. Throughout the writing process,
allow chn to time each others reports as final reports
should be approx 1 minute.

Chn combine partners to form groups of 4- here


teachers can choose groups if needed.
As a class, watch some you tube clips on how to
create a news report/special effects and/or adding
PowerPoint presentations to iMovies.
This week use the computer lab to go through a quick
lesson for using PowerPoint.
Chn should start to create backgrounds and images
needed to enhance/support their report.

PRODUCING the NEWS

Groups should begin filming and editing their reports.


Once members have their own segments finalised,
they should all be working together to combine their
stories, creating their final production.
Allow groups extra editing and effects time.

LIGHTS, CAMERA & ACTION

Groups present their final News Reports to the class.


All classes will be present their reports to Stage 3 in
the hall.

The following tasks can be implemented as a means to increase student confidence and familiarity in presenting
to the class. This should ultimately assist them in their final performances.

N Create a class roster, where children are required to present a short speech about a news item
they watched, read or heard that week.

N These should be informal and simply recaps that last a minute or so.
