LITLLE ROCK NINE

September 1927- Central High School opens in Little Rock, Arkansas for
white students. (It cost 1.5 million dollars)
September 1929- Paul Laurence Dunbar High School opens for African
American students in Little Rock. (It costs 400,000 dollars)
1941-1943- the time when the nine students are born
1941 On September 11, Minnijean Brown, one of the
nine students, was born. She would be 16 when she
went to Central.

1941- On September 22, Earnest Green, one of the nine


students, was born. She would be a senior when he
entered Central.
1954- On May 17, the US Supreme Court ruled segregation in public
schools as unconstitutional in the Brown vs Board of Education of
Topeka.
1955- On May 24, Little Rock establishes the Blossom Plan, a plan to
slowly integrate the schools in Little Rock throughout a six year period,
starting with the high school.
1957- The Blossom Plan begins
Before the 1957 school year begins, the governor of Arkansas
tried to overrule the integration at Central High school by
ordering the National Guard to prohibit the black students from
entering the school. But a Federal judge prohibits this and Central
School has to allow African Americans to go to school.
1957- On September 23, the
nine students; Minnijean
Brown, Elizabeth Eckford,
Ernest Green, Thelma
Mothershed Wair, Melba
Pattillo Beals, Carlotta Walls
LaNier, Terrence Roberts, Jefferson Thomas, and Gloria Cecilia Ray
enter Central High School with a mob of 1000 white people
protesting around them. The police have to escort them to school
but deem it to dangerous and the students have to leave.

1957- On September 25, the nine students go back to school with


the federal troops escorting them
- The students all received verbal and physical harassment while
attending Central.
1958- Sometime in this year Brown, was suspended and expelled
from Central because of her response towards the white students
abuse. She reportedly called someone white trash
1958- On February 17, Brown moved to New York and lived with
African American phycologists who were studying the effects on
African American children who attended segregated schools.
1958- On May 27, Green is the first black student to graduate from
Central High school (previously an all-white school)
1958-On May 27, Martin Luther King Jr. attends Greens graduation
ceremony.
1958- Brown, Green, and the other seven students received the
prestigious Spingarn Medal by the NAACP for their pioneer role in
upholding the basic ideals of American democracy
1959- Brown graduated from a private school in Manhattan and
went on to the University of Southern Illinois to study Journalism.
1964- Green graduates from Michigan State University with a
degree in sociology

1998- On October 17, Bill Clinton awards


Green, Brown, and the other seven students
the highest civilian award, the Congressional
Gold Medal, for their actions during the Civil
Rights Movement.
