MusicalAmerica'sfirstissuewasonOctober8,1898.ItsfounderwasJohnChristianFreund(1848
1924),whowithMiltonWeil,alsofoundedTheMusicTradesmagazinein1893.[3][4]Thirtysixissues
appeareduntilJune24,1899,coveringmusic,drama,andthearts.In1899thepublicationwas
discontinuedforsixyearsduetoalackoffinancialresources.ItreappearedasaweeklyfromNovember
18,1905until1929,solelyfocusingonclassicalmusic.In1921MusicalAmericapublishedthefirst
"Guide,"whichlaterevolvedintotheInternationalDirectoryofthePerformingArts,nowtheMusical
AmericaDirectory.
AfterJohnFreunddiedin1924,MiltonWellwhohadbeenFreund'sbusinesspartnercontinuedthe
publication.InJune1927,MusicalAmericaconsolidatedwithfiveotherprominenttradepublicationsto
formanewcompanynamedTradePublications,Inc.,headedbyWalterHoweyandVerneHardinPorter
(18881942).Includedwereitssisterpublication,TheMusicTrades,andTheAmericanArchitect,The
Barbers'Journal,BeautyCulture,andPerfumers'Journal.[5]Shields&Companywastheinvestment
bankingfirmthathandledtheconsolidation.MusicalAmericasubsequentlybegandiversifyingwith
articlesaboutjazz,dance,radio,andrecords.
TradePublications,Inc.,filedforbankruptcyin1929and,inabankruptcysaleonJuly19,1929,John
Majeski,Weil'sformerassistant,purchasedfourofthesixmagazinesfor$45,200:(i)MusicalAmerica,
(ii)TheMusicTrades,(iii)TheBarbers'Journal,and(iv)BeautyCulture.[6]
Aftersome30yearsofrelativestability,effectiveJanuary1,1960,JohnMajeskiretiredandsold
MusicalAmericaandTheMusicTradestoMusicPublications,Ltd.,anewlyformedcorporationheaded
bytwoeditorsfromMusicalAmerica,TheodateJohnson(19072002)andRonaldEyer.Johnson,sister
