Future Verb Tense

Abstract
The following is a third grade multidisciplinary project-based lesson plan using the Teach,
Practice and Apply format. This lesson has been designed to address future tense verbs, subjectverb agreement, climate, and weather on Earth. Lesson plan integrates technology as a means
for creativity in demonstration of understanding.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.1.f
Ensure subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent agreement.

(3-ESS2-2)
CCS.SCIENCE-3-ESS2-1. Represent data in tables and graphical displays to describe typical
weather conditions expected during a particular season. [Clarification Statement: Examples of
data could include average temperature, precipitation, and wind direction.] [Assessment
Boundary: Assessment of graphical displays is limited to pictographs and bar graphs. Assessment
does not include climate change.]
CCS.SCIENCE-3-ESS2-2. Obtain and combine information to describe climates in different
regions of the world.
LESSON BACKGROUND
Our students have recently been utilizing new technology resources in the classroom. We have
learned to use power point and digital stories to create presentations. In third grade we are
learning about the Earth and its systems. As a class we have been discussing hemispheres,
geographic regions, and seasons. In English Language Arts, students are learning about verb
tenses and subject-verb agreement. Over the past few days we have learned about past tense and
present tense. Today we will be discussing future tense verbs. Students will then use what they
already knew, recently acquired information, and research to complete a multidisciplinary
project.

Future Verb Tense

TEACH
Through use of power point teacher will ask students to answer the following questions:

A verb in the present tense tells us____________ (what is happening right now).
A verb in the past tense tells us ____________ (what has already happened).
So, a verb in the future tense tells us____________ (what will happen).
Discuss rule to create a verb in future tense.
Will + verb= future tense
Give examples:
o After lunch I WILL PLAY baseball.
o Tomorrow I WILL RUN 5 miles.
o Next, I WILL TALK to Anthonys group.
o Later we WILL CLEAN the room.
o In an hour we WILL COOK dinner.
o Next week I WILL RACE a car.
o Next year I WILL MOVE to Beaumont.
Discuss clue words that will indicate a verb should be in future tense (time words)
o Tomorrow
o Next week
o After
o Next year

Future Verb Tense

PRACTICE

Remind students there are three types of verbs, past, present, and future.
Pointing behind your back, remind students that past tense verbs usually end in ed.
o Some irregular verbs will not follow this pattern. Put the verb in a Last week I
_________, sentence to see if the verb sounds right.
o Write some examples of past tense verbs on the board (using examples given by

students).
Pointing down to your shoes, remind students of present tense verbs, I am

___________ing right now.

o Once again ask for examples and write them down.
Pointing forward, discuss future tense verbs. Tell the students you need to add WILL in

front of the verb to make it future tense.

o Ask for examples from the class.
Display a list of verbs on the promethean board.
Have students point forward if the verb tense is future, point down at their shoes if the
verb is present tense, and thumbs pointing behind their backs if the verb is past tense.

Circle all the future tense verbs.

Give students a worksheet to do independently for practice.
Allow students to complete the same worksheet on their Chromebook if they would

prefer.
On their Chromebooks students will play Who Wants to Be a Millionaire-Verb Tenses- in
groups. This will need to be created by the teacher prior to the lesson. Questions and
answers in the interactive Millionaire game will tie into the Earth, climates, and weather.

Future Verb Tense

APPLY- This will be an ongoing project- will take up to one week to complete.
Direct students to choose a location anywhere in the world. Students may work alone or in pairs
(each contributing their fair share). Read the following to the students:

You are traveling to earth from the planet Seidflaggle (a pretend planet).
What language will you be speaking? (You can make up your own Martian language).
Where would you be traveling? (Choose any real location on Earth).
You need to prepare for your travels.
What is the typical climate of this location during the month of March?
If you were arriving tomorrow, what would the weather be like?
How do you know this?
What resources could you use?
What would you need to pack and why?
Do you need any protective gear? Why or why not?
What will you do once you arrive on Earth?

Each student will choose a place on Earth to travel. They will need to research the climate and
weather of that location. Students will need to research the location, and plan by packing and
preparing for travel. Students need to write out their future plans for preparation and arrival at
their chosen location. The assignment may be completed using Power Point or Digital
Storytelling. In the assignment students must:

Prepare for travel to a new land (their location choice anywhere on Earth).
Write about their preparation (students may use the following sentence frames).
o Tomorrow I will be traveling to ______(choose any real location on Earth)___.
o It is going to be _____(choose what the weather will be like)____________ there.
o I think this because_______________________________________________
(where did you find information to support your weather prediction?)_________.
o Here is evidence of typical weather in ______(this is where you will insert a table
or graphical display used to describe typical weather conditions during a
particular season in the location you have chosen).
o I will need to pack ____________________ because_________________.
o I will also need to ______________ _______________ because ______.
o I will be traveling by__________(a made up form of transportation)____.

Future Verb Tense

o When I arrive________________________________________________.
o Then, I _____________________________________________________.
o Next, I _____________________________________________________.
o After that ___________________________________________________.
o On the following day__________________________________________.
o Once I return home______________________________________________.
Use at LEAST 5 future tense verbs.
Include pictures!
Include students name.
Include a creative title.

**CHALLENGE- WRITE OR NARRATE IN YOUR MARTIAN LANGUAGE (A

LANGUAGE YOU HAVE CREATED). MUST INCLUDE ENGLISH TRANSLATION**
Power Point and Digital Stories may be shared with the class if students choose to do so after
all requirements are met.
All guidelines and rubric will be posted on google classroom for students to view. We have
used both Power Point and Digital Story tools in our classroom so the students are familiar
with them. Students will have the option to use the following checklist found on Educational
Uses of Digital Storytelling to assist them in creating their power point presentation or digital
story.
1. Start with an Idea
2. Research/Explore/Learn
3. Write/Script
4. Storyboard/Plan
5. Gather and Create Images, Audio and Video

6. Put It All Together

7. Share
8. Reflection and Feedback
Get Started with Digital Storytelling and Digital and Storytelling Software resources will be
posted on google classroom for students to use in creating their video, picture, and audio
selections.
REFLECTION
The use of Power Point in this lesson will enhance student learning because students will
be able to follow along visually during instruction. If a teacher simply stood at the front of the
room and talked about verbs and verb tenses, some students might catch on, but others would be
lost. Our students need as much visual, audio and kinesthetic stimuli possible during instruction.
It is important to reach all of our learners and using technology will help us to do just that. The
use of a Power Point interactive game on verb tenses has been designed to be engaging and
exciting for the third grade students. Many of the students in our class love technology, so I
believe including interactive games on their Chromebooks will only enhance the learning
process. Allowing students to create their own power point presentation or digital story will give
them the opportunity to work creatively. Not all students like simple paper/pencil assignments, it
is essential for us to remember this. It is my hope that incorporating technology and creativity in
this assignment, I will reach all of my students. They will be working, learning, researching,
creating, compiling, manipulating, and engaging while applying skills we have learned.
