Higher education is the topic. Through out the first weeks of spring semester,
Writing 2010 students have been reading about budget cuts, diversity, view points and
the benefits that come from colleges and/or universities. Many of the articles read are
holding a conversation with each other, others are distantly in the same conversation
but do not know it.
Obtaining Integrity is an article written by Kezar and his main claims are that
colleges have become so expensive, there is a strong possibility that the benefits after
you graduate may not be worth it. She's goes on to point out that colleges and universities are beginning to grow more institutions and expect more money for these institution
and/or more research. This article is similar to another one by Bonewitz and Soley.
Sara Bonewitz and Lawrence Soley are the authors of an article criticizing the
way colleges are or are not spending their funds called Research and the Bottom Line
in Todays University. These writers are using this article to join a conversation about
universities and colleges compromising their money. One example they give it that
schools are beginning to hire more part time professors and staff than full time workers.
The strategy behind this is that part time employees do not get paid as much, do not get
an office or any of the benefits other full time employees would receive like health insurance. Another example is the research studies higher education is participating in.

This point given relays back to an article titled Deconstructing Academe: The Birth of
Critical University Studies.
Jeffery J. Williams dwells on the accusations made on how the school is holding
back financially on their students. Deconstructing Academe explains that students are
forced into participating in lower priced research studies essentially because the funding
is not there to spend. Opposite from the outlook Williams is giving, Hanke and Hearn
have a different selection of words to say on the subject.
Out of the Ruins, the University to Come, written by Bob Hanke and Alison
Hearn, gives a more positive outlook on the finical cutbacks that not only students are
experiencing but colleges and universities are grieving as well. A point given from these
writers is not where is all the money going? But it is more toward that maybe there really
is not any funding there for schools to spend? A short speech from David Foster explains the difference between the thought process of writers Jeffery J. Williams and Bob
Hanke along with Alison Hearn.
This is Water is David Fosters speech saying that it is easy to think is a normal
default state thinking the world revolves around us, but sometimes humans need to
step back and consider all different options. In other words, look in different perspectives. He tells a story about driving down the highway, and large SUV has the nerve to
cut another man off and force him to hit his breaks and immediately the driver gets upset without ,even for a second, considering that the man driving the SUV is in more of a
hurry than he is. Perhaps the man has a sick child in is passenger seat that

needs a hospital immediately. Relating this back to school funding, Williams is expressing the ways he believes that schools could be using their money instead of holding
back. Hanke and Hearn say, that there is a possibility that the reasoning behind schools
not spending large amounts of money could be because they simply do not have the
funds to spend.
Higher education is the topic. Writers and speakers have a lot to say about the
flaws and/or achievements of the schooling system. Varying from budget cuts, diversity
issues and research studies, the conversation goes far back and will continue to move
far forward. Whether one writer agrees or not, that is the way conversations get started
and possibly never end.
