Comprehension Skill: Sequence of Events

Some events in a text occur in a certain order. This time-order is known as sequence of
events. Good readers should notice the sequence of events to better understand the text.
Certain signal words such as first, next, last, then, after, finally, etc. help readers infer the
sequence of events.

many adverbs end in ly (loudly, softly, gently, angrily, happily, sadly, quietly)
an adverb of frequency tells how often something happens (sometimes, usually, never,
often)
an adverb of intensity tells to what degree or how much something happens (almost, hardly)
adverbs can be in the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence

When you read a sentence, ask yourself: What is the action in this sentence (verb)? Then, ask:
What word describes the action (verb) or tells how it is being done?
