Pandemic II: Player Impact Guide
Game __5___ of 10 points
Player ___5__ of 9 points
World ___6___ of 8 points
Total ___16___ of 27 points
I managed to infect most of the world but madagascar and parts of south america. They kept
developing a vaccine or the disease was not transmitted their due to government blocks or no natural
disasters. The less visible side effects a disease has the easier it can be spread because the
government and health officials dont see its a dangerous they mistake it for something common. So
people will travel and interact like they always do spreading it easily because they dont know they
are sick.
Part 2:
To do:
After each design principle A-C, write a paragraph describing ways in which this game met or
did not meet the design principle. After completing A-C, provide a conclusion that summarizes your
evaluation and make recommendations.
Design principle A: Design for
Meaningful Play
Tap personal goals, interests, and passions: it must support users in pursuing their own goals;
one way to do this is to support users within the platform to set their own goals and guide
them so they can accomplish short and long term goals; or it connects to something they care
about - e.g., save the planet
Enroll the existing community around the core goal - content or activity
Have supporting visuals that support the narrative clues
Beware of messing with social contents meaning? Does it have social meaning?
Application: In what ways does the game designer use or fail to use the Design for Meaning Play
principles?
Pandemic is a game about trial and error when it come to creating a deadly disease. You have one
objective to wipe out the planet. The game designers laid out in a very simple and strategic way
allowing you to see where there is infection by color changes in the region and the statistic of of
where it was and how infectious is was as well as how aware people are. They dont set up goal you
are figuring it out as you go in a trial and error method. Though their visuals do support the idea how
the different events affect if a disease spreads in and area compared to another. The game touches
base on some of the Principle A but it is not a game that is really meaningful. More of a game that is
interesting to watch cause and effect as well as pass the time
Design principle B:
Mastery Create a Rule System to Master
Fun is another word for learning under optimal conditions. Rules help create interesting challenges.
Present a clear visual goal - an interesting challenge; More than rewards and punishments must lead to learning
Structured flow of goals so the next goal is just within your reach Provide variety, depth,
complexity
Challenge is scaffolded; provides learning patterns to recognize, or puzzles to solve; problems
to solve
Provide juicy feedback, where the player learns from failures and has experiences of mastery
Beware of encouraging unintended behaviors Does the game lead to unintended negative
behaviors?
Application: In what ways does the game designer use or fail to use the Design principle: Create a Rule
System to Master?
Principle B focuses on the learning aspect of the game.Pandemic allows the player to see how
different attributes of a disease makes its more infectious, more curable, more noticeable and what
doesnt. Though you only have one goal its not very clear how close you are to reaching that goal
unless you are checking the world tab which tells you the statistics and what countries are
infected, healthy and gone. Since the game is a trial and error style game there is not a lot of feedback
which can lead you to believe that you are doing well when in reality you are losing. The game also
doesnt have much of a pattern because depending on the different characteristic you give the
disease affects how it spread ect. It does show how quickly things can change when it come to a
disease and different responses by countries and medical fields that may occur
Design Principle C:
Autonomy - A Free Space to Play
Provide a shared digital toy or object for exploration with starting points without curbing the
players autonomy or devaluing the product?
Application: In what ways does the game designer use or fail to use the Design principle: Autonomy
a Free Space to Play?
Overall the game does provided a free space to play. There is not right or wrong combination and its
up to the player to choose what they think will work best. They are making decision whether or not to
spend points or keep them and how fast or how slow they will earn these point. you start with a small
number of points to get you started and then based on how affects your choices are working you
change and adapt. Of all the principles i think the game has this concept down. There are endless
possibilities and challenges that you have to overcome. Which keeps the player interested and makes
them think on how to change or adapt.
Conclusion: What did you like about the game? Dislike? Recommendations for future re-design.
I think pandemic is an interesting game. I found it really interesting to see how different combinations
had different effects. Though i did get a bit impatient with the game and was not clear on the
instruction. I found it more as a game to pass the time. The game did inform me on how the
government might respond to a pandemic if one is identified. As well as other factors that could
contribute to a pandemic and how fast vaccines can be created. I think small goals would be beneficial
to players to have a better understanding on how to play the game or even warnings or notifications.
That alert the player of what is going on. There is a lot of different things the player has to look an an
interpret It can be a bit much to try and do all at once. I found the game really interesting and
informative overall i like the ability to choose the features i want.
