English Language Arts Reflection

The CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy and the CA ELD Standards will prepare students for
learning and life after high school. The standards are used as objectives to help educators teach
the appropriate content for each grade level. In order for educators to teach elementary school
they must know the curriculum which consist of phonological awareness; phonics, word
recognition, sight words, syntax, morphology, pragmatics, lexicon, idioms, homophones,
homonyms, consonants, diphthongs, vowels, syllables, vocabulary, conventions of English,
knowledge of language, and fluency. Teaching literature also consist of teaching a range of text;
stories, drama, poetry, fiction book, non-fiction books, historical text, scientific text, and
technical text. In addition educators need to be aware of students who are learning English as
their second language. The CCSS for ELA are also available in Spanish and are similar to the
English standards in the fact that they have the same objective.
I feel well prepared in areas like phonics, syllables, nouns, verbs, conjunctions,
contractions, reading, writing, syntax, subject, homophones, etc. I feel less prepared in teaching
English language learners the different writing rules in English. I also feel less prepared in
teaching students about silent letters like e,-p,-b,-ch,-th, etc.
My LBS355 class helped me improve my writing skills by teaching me writing rules like
commas, conjunctions, subjects, and verbs. This class also helped me understand different
writing definitions and how or when to use them; prepositions, articles, auxiliary words, quotes,

etc. My ENG 487 class helped me understand the difference between phonology the study of the
sounds in a word and morphology the study of the meaning of a word. This class also prepared
me by helping me understand basic writing rules like nouns, adjectives, function words, content
words, inflectional words, derivational words, etc.
The artifacts I will be using include a project I did for my ENG487 class. The project
consist of a childrens passage with words I had to identify as two syllable words, digraphs,
VCE(vowel consonant e), closed syllables, r-controlled words, silent-e words, and the schwa.
This project demonstrates my knowledge in ELA, because I have a list of writing rules and
examples. As a future educator I will introduce students a rule like r-controlled words, and they
will look for words with r-controlled words in a book or a journal. This will help students
understand that some words are r-controlled and they will show their understanding by finding
and looking for words that fit this criteria.
