Describe some of the choices you made in this assignment. What theoretical or
research-based perspectives from the course did you bring to bear on these choices?

I found that through the material covered in class and the research associated with it I had a
better understanding of how formative, informative and authentic assessments can be used
more effectively in a Foreign Language classroom. In the process of working on this
assignment I included assessments that I had previously used in my teaching but I applied
my new knowledge to change these assessments for future use.


Reflect on the effects of this assignment on your future teaching. What will be
different because of the work you did?

As mentioned, I do plan on using the same formative, informative and authentic assessments
I have used but I will change some of them to encourage my students to self-regulate. I will
also collect data from these assessments, create a chart and record my observations when I

give these assessments. I believe this will help me to also reflect on my own instruction and
make changes according to my findings.

Reflect on your understanding of the standard addressed by this assignment, and on
how the assignment will help your teaching in the area of that standard.
This assignment correlates with several of the standards but my focus was mainly on the
assessments standard. As stated, I will be using various assessments strategies in my foreign
language class to shape my instruction, monitor student learning, assist students when they
self-reflect.

I have not used portfolios as part of my instruction in the past. I will now include portfolios
in all my classes because I have a better understanding of their value to the student, the
teacher, the parents, other teachers and administration. Portfolios can be used to effectively
monitor student progress. They can also be customized to my content area to examine how
students are performing in specific skill areas.

VII - Assessments. In the process of planning a unit, I will now take a closer look at the
various assessment options with a better understanding of the purpose of each.
