Lesson One

Tuning In

Provides students with the opportunities to become engaged with the topic
The hands on activity and resources are used to elicited students understanding of areas in Australia where bushfires occur
Ascertain the students initial curiosity about the topic
Students are engaged with the unit of work through class discussion, use of visual resources and a variety of activities

Lesson Two

Allow students to share their personal experience of the topic

Through the KWL chart students are eliciting their prior knowledge
Preparing to Find Establish what the students already know about the topic
out
Throughout the process drama students will provide their understanding of how people prepare and respond to a bushfire
through a number of drama activities. These activities include creating body shapes to represent items people would pack if
forced to evacuate as a result of a bushfire. Creating freeze frames to depict how to prepare their home for bushfire season
and answering questions as their character to explain how they would respond and feel if a bushfire was to occur
Provide the students with a focus for the forthcoming experience
In this lesson students will have the opportunity to draw upon their prior knowledge of bushfires to provide them with an
understanding of what the unit of work will focus upon; how people prepare and respond to bushfires.

Lesson Three

Finding Out

Help in the planning of further experience and activities

Through drama activities students are encouraged to consider how people prepare and respond to bushfires. Eliciting their
curiosity insight of learning this topic
Further stimulate the students curiosity
Introduce the students to first hand information through a visit from an SES person
Generates discussion and exquisite thinking allowing the teacher to incorporate students interest into further lessons
Provide new information which may answer some of the students earlier questions
Through having SES volunteers they are able to provide up to date information. This is an authentic learning experience
Raise other questions for students to explore in the future
By providing specific opportunities for students to reflect, in turn discovery what aspect they would like to further learn about
Challenge the students knowledge, belief and values
The students knowledge is constantly challenged as they are provided opportunities to think inquisitively and also develop
their understanding of the topic. Students values are also supported through the use of class and school rules being
implemented into the lesson
Help students make sense of further activities and experiences which have been planned for them
Students have been aware throughout their whole unit, they are aware of the task that is to be partly completed in this lesson.

Lesson Four

Sorting Out

Provide students with concrete materials and means of sorting out and representing information and ideas arising from the
finding out stage
Students will be provided with hands on materials and real life situations. As they look at the effect that bushfires and floods
might have on their school environment
Provide students with the opportunity to process the information they have gathered and present this in a number of ways
Students are able to present through the use of ICT, which supports the visual and creative learners. Through the use of
popplet and verbal discussion and group activities

Connections

Allow for a diverse range of outcomes

Extend and challenge students understanding about the topic
Throughout this lesson students focus on how the use of bushfires has changed. They are having to think about the use of fire
and also look into the indigenous perspective of bushfires
Provide more information in order to broaden the range of understandings available to the students

Students will be looking at different items and discuss how they can be used to extend their understanding
Help students draw conclusions about what they have learnt
Students are now focusing on why people live in certain areas and if bushfires affect their decision. They are able to combine
all their previous knowledge on this topic to make an informed decision
Provide opportunities for reflection both on what has been learnt and on the learning process itself
During this lesson students will complete a pair share/ group share where they will each share something they have learnt
throughout this lesson

Lesson Nine

Taking Action

Assist students to make links between their understanding and their experience in the real world
Students are forming inquiry questions to determine how people respond to the event of a bushfire. Pictures of houses in the
bush will service a stimulus to support students in writing these questions. A video clip from Black Saturday bushfires will
be watched for students to answer the self devised inquiry questions

understanding of how members of society such as families, communities and services respond to a bushfire

Lesson Ten

Taking Action

Provide further insight into students understanding for future unit planning

and help the society
Enable students to make choices and develop the belief that they can be effective participants in society
