Problem 2.1
Air at 20OC with a convection heat transfer coefficient of 25 W/m 2 ⋅ K blows over a
horizontal steel hot plate ( k = 43 W/m ⋅ K ). The surface area of the plate is 0.38 m2
with a thickness of 2 cm. The plate surface is maintained at a constant temperature of
Ts = 250OC and the plate loses 300 W from its surface by radiation. Calculate the
inside plate temperature (Ti)

Schematic:

Assumptions:
1. steady-state condition
2. one dimension heat transfer
3. no heat generation
4. constant properties

Analysis:
Governing equation:
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 𝑇𝑇2 − 𝑇𝑇1
𝑞𝑞 ′′ 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 = −𝑘𝑘 = 𝑘𝑘
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 𝐿𝐿
𝑞𝑞 ′′ 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 = ℎ(𝑇𝑇𝑠𝑠 − 𝑇𝑇∞ )

By conservation of energy
𝑞𝑞 ′′ 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 = 𝑞𝑞 ′′ 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 + 𝑞𝑞 ′′ 𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟

43(𝑇𝑇𝑖𝑖 − 250)
25 × (250 − 20) + 300 =
0.02
𝑇𝑇𝑖𝑖 = 252.8140℃
Answer:
𝑇𝑇𝑖𝑖 = 252.8140℃

Problem 1.2. (4 points)
An engine block with a surface area measured to be 0.95 m2 generates a power output
of 50 kW with a net engine efficiency of 35%. The engine block operates inside a
compartment at 157OC and the average convection heat transfer coefficient is
50 W/m 2 ⋅ K . If convection is the only heat transfer mechanism occurring, determine
the engine block surface temperature.

Assumptions:
1. steady-state condition
2. one dimension heat transfer
3. constant properties

by conservation of energy:
𝐸𝐸̇𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 − 𝐸𝐸̇𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 + 𝐸𝐸̇𝑔𝑔 = 𝐸𝐸̇𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠
𝐸𝐸̇𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 = 𝐸𝐸̇𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠 − 𝐸𝐸̇𝑔𝑔 = 0.65 × 50
𝑇𝑇 = 841.21℃

Problem 2.3.(3 points)
Consider a large plane wall of thickness L = 0.3 m, thermal conductivity
k = 2.5 W/m ⋅ K , and surface area A = 12 m2. The left side of the wall at x = 0 is

subjected to a net heat flux of q0 = 700 W/m 2 while the temperature at that surface is

measured to be T1 = 80OC. Assuming constant thermal conductivity and no heat

generation in the wall, (a) express the differential equation and the boundary conditions
for steady one-dimensional heat conduction through the wall, (b) obtain a relation for
the variation of temperature in the wall by solving the differential equation, and (c)
evaluate the temperature of the right surface of the wall at x = L.
