Aftershowingthevideo,asktheclasswhattheythinkrhymingisandiftheycancomeupwithan

Tellthestudentsthatwearegoingtoplayagamecalled"Gimme,Gimme."Therulesofthegameis
thataspeakerwillsay,"Gimme,Gimme,somethingthatrhymeswith_______."Thenthestudentswill
havetofindsomethingthatrhymeswiththatwordandbringitbacktotheteacher.Theteacherwill
startitoffwithsaying,"Gimme,Gimme,somethingthatrhymeswiththewordbear."Thestudentswill
searchtheclassroomforsomethingthatrhymeswith"bear"(i.e.hair,chair,pair,pear,etc).Itcanbean
objectordemonstration.Whenthefirststudentbringssomethingthatrhymes,theteacherwillgetthe
attentionoftheclasstostopwheretheyareandlookattheteacher.Theteacherwillasktheclasswhat
theobject/demonstrationis,ifitrhymeswiththewordthatwasgivenandwhy.Thenthefirststudent
whobroughttheobjecttotheteacherwillbeabletochoosethenext"gimme,gimme"andrepeatthe
processoveragainapproximately35times(dependingonhowwellthestudentsunderstandrhyming)

Afterthelast"gimme,gimme,"havethestudentsgatherinthegatheringarea/rugandtellthemthatwe
aregoingtoreadthebook,GreenEggsandHambyDr.Seuss.Whilereading,havethemfinishthe
sentencewiththerhymingwordusingcontextclues.Forexample,"Idonotliketheminahouse.Ido
notlikethemwitha...Whatrhymeswithhouse?...MOUSE!"

c. Concluding

Finally,afterreadingthebookwiththeclass,passouttheworksheetwherethestudentswillhavetofill
intheblankwiththematchingrhymingword.Thenhavethemchooseasentencetheywanttodraw
out,copythesentence,andhavethemdrawitout.

Adaptations and Extensions:


Forstudentswhoaren'tmeetingthestandard(GearDown):
Wewouldhavethestudent,oneononesoundoutthewordsthatrhymeandpointoutthattheendings
ofthewordsoundthesame.Thenhavethemfindotherwordsthathavethesameendingsoundswhile
guidingthem.Forastudentwhocan'treadwell,wewouldreadthemthesentenceandask,"Whatword
rhymeswith...(theunderlinedword)."Theycansoundoutthewordandspellitaswelltheycan
throughemergentspellings.
Forstudentswhohavemetthestandardandneedextension(GearUp):
Wewouldhavethestudentmakeuphis/herownrhymingsentencesorphrasesanddepictoneoftheir
creations.
