Research
Dissertation The Political Power of the Black Church.
Many people call for the separation of church and politics. However, within the
black
community, the two cannot be separated. For this reason, my research
looks at how African American congregants behave after hearing their pastors,
and the church itself, preach conservative values on social issues, but yet,
advance notions of voting for whoever is on the Democratic ticket, claiming the
party of the left is the best way to advance the interests of the black community.

Internship Experience
Southern Education Foundation Intern
Southern Education Foundation is a non-profit organization
established in 1867 and currently is the Souths largest education
philanthropy. Through a variety of programs and strategies involving
research, analysis, advocacy, technical assistance, and outreach, SEF works

to: improve education policy and process, inform the public about education
issues and policy options, and promote a high quality of universal education.
During the duration of my internship I was responsible for executive
presentations amongst the President and CEO at the headquarters located
in Atlanta, Georgia. While spending time with the Southern Education
Foundation, I was a participant on several panels which discussed
educational topics to a group of individuals located throughout the states.
Under my internship with Southern Education Foundation, I was assigned
to work with fifteen other interns who were strategically placed throughout
the country.

Southern Echo
Southern Echo is a leadership development, education and training
organization working to develop effective accountable leaders in the
communities of Mississippi. Southern Echo has over 10 offices throughout
the state of Mississippi and partners with organizations in 12 other states.
Their main goal is empower communities in order to create a process
through which community people can hold the political, economic,
educational and environmental systems accountable to the needs and
interests of the community. During my internship at Southern Echo I was
accountable for registering over 300 people to vote, collecting census
forms, and holding meetings with youth in several areas of the state in
order to connect an intergenerational model in forming policies. While
placed at Southern Echos headquarters I would develop executive
summaries from meetings being held at the state capital concerning state
policies, which would be briefed to higher personal in the office.
