Professional Aspiration
Social Work in Public School or Public Family Services Agency
I seek employment as a social worker in an agency that advocates for the needed services of the immigrant
population on the community level. I wish to provide social work services to my population of interest by
coordinating with service providers and community leaders in order to help create a stronger community
network that advocates for immigrants in low-income areas.
Education
B.S.W. (Expected May 2015), Wayne State University School of Social Work, Detroit, Michigan, 3.95 G.P.A.
Certificate in Generalist Practice (Expected May 2015), Wayne State University School of Social Work,
Detroit, Michigan
During my two years at the B.S.W. Program, I learned how to effectively interview and assess vulnerable
individuals by exercising my social work skills such as reflectively responding, summarizing, and paraphrasing.
I also learned how to analyze social welfare programs and policies, and provide recommendations for
improvement. I gained a theoretical understanding of the social work profession and ways that it can be applied
to my practice to help promote the quality of my future services.
Career-Related Experiences
Volunteer Reader, Hamtramck Public Library, Hamtramck, Michigan, April May 2012
As a Volunteer Reader at Hamtramck Public Library, I assisted interactions between parents and children during
reading activities by engaging and maintaining their interest. For instance, translating key themes and
vocabulary terms in a storybook to a foreign language helped immigrant parents understand the story their
children were reading. I also assisted immigrant children with their reading skills such as spelling and
pronunciation. The reading activities gave me a great understanding of the difficulties parents face in trying to
support the academic success of their children.
Classroom Assistant, Detroit City Camp, Detroit, Michigan, June August 2014
As a Classroom Assistant I was responsible to keep children ages 4-5 actively engaged in summer camp. This
responsibility required being resourceful of my time, being aware of my surroundings, and developing a
positive relationship with the camp children. My supervisor recognized my technical skills with Microsoft
Office during one of the camp meetings I attended and assigned me to a new position at the front desk. As a
front desk assistant, I signed parents in and out using child security software, made and received calls to parents
and other parties affiliated with the camp, and created permission slips and flyers for field trip events.

Social Work Student Intern, Services to Enhance Potential (Eastern Resource Center), Detroit, Michigan,
September 2014 - December 2014
During the fall semester of 2014, I worked with a social service agency that provided support coordination and
employment services to adults with developmental disabilities. This unique service environment compelled me
to face the challenges of working with individuals with mental impairment. As a result, I was able to effectively
communicate with developmentally disabled individuals. By December, my leadership experiences as a
Computers Skills Trainer gave me the opportunity to create a PowerPoint Project containing slides completed
by clients regarding information about themselves to help them connect with their self-identity, learn selfexpression through technical skills, and gain confidence in their abilities.
Social Work Student Intern, Homeless Action Network of Detroit, Detroit, Michigan February 2015 April
2015
My internship with the Homeless Action Network of Detroit (HAND) provided me a macro-level understanding
of systematic community approaches to ending homelessness through service organizations. I was trained to
complete data entry tasks using the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), an online database that
tracks homeless clients within a designated community. In addition, I conducted pre-assessment surveys on
homeless clients residing at shelters and created toolkits for employees at an agency call center.
