GRADING POLICIES

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to Open House! It is our goal
to create the optimal learning environment for
our students. In order to create this
environment, many classroom expectations and
procedures need to be enforced. These
expectations and procedures will ensure that
the best learning is taking place. We will be
utilizing the following grading system in our
classroom this year. Lets have a great year of
learning together!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Emmerling

Research has proven that 30 minutes

of quality homework a night can raise standardized test
score by up to 40%.
Students will be given homework Monday Thursday
which should take between 30 45 minutes to complete.
This should be returned the next day unless otherwise
noted. If homework is not completed, students will
complete the homework assignment during their recess
period the next day.
Students are aware that it is their responsibility to
complete their nightly homework and to get a
parent/guardian to check their homework before
getting their folders.

Absenteeism and tardiness will be handled according to

the district guidelines outlined in the student
handbook. Student is responsible for contacting
appropriate teachers regarding missed assignments.
Teachers will only send work home (by parental request)
if a student has missed more than 3 days in a row.
Please notify teacher by 9am via note or email to allow
for preparation of materials. Students with absences will
have as many days absent to return missed work.
Students who are absent after a test is already scheduled
will take the test on the day that they return to school,
no additional study time will be given.

.*

Math will be given every night and reading/word

study is also expected every night.
Science and social studies is given periodically
throughout the week and is intended to be done
independently by the student.
We try to avoid giving homework on weekends
because we consider that to be family time,
however occasionally may be sent home.

Your student will be given a Homework Folder which

should be checked every night. Students will also be
writing all assignments/test dates down in their
assignment books which are handed out on the first day
of school. Please check both this folder and sign the
assignment book on a nightly basis.
*HW is not graded, but students will be held
responsible for any missing work*

Students are always expected to perform their best during school and submit
their own work. Students will be assessed on a daily basis in a variety of
capacities. This will include, but is not limited to, tests, quizzes, projects, and
frequent checks for understanding.
There are three primary forms of assessment we will be using:
Formative Not counted towards quarter grades, but used to check for
understanding on a daily basis.
Summative Graded and counted towards final quarter grades. This
includes tests, quizzes, projects, and worksheets.
Diagnostic Not graded, but used to assess students initial knowledge of
concepts and guide further instruction.
It is important that parents be kept informed about their childs growth in
school academically, socially and emotionally. The purpose of a standards
based report card is to provide the parents, teachers and students more
information. For example, a child receiving a C in math doesnt help the
parent or teacher know what the child didnt master- it is more of a summation
of their overall performance in math to this point. While developing the report
card, teachers fear that parents want to correlate numbers with letter grades,
where in fact, the two are not alike. Students have multiple opportunities to
demonstrate they have learned a specific skill. Recognizing that students
have different learning styles, teachers use a variety of assessment, including
written, oral interviews, teacher observations of group or individual tasks,
journals, and learning logs. Research has shown that when students
understand specifically what they need to learn, it is easier for them to be
successful in life.

The following is the Standards Based grading scale which we

will be utilizing:
4 Exceeds the standard
3 Meets the standard
2 Progressing towards the standard
1 Below the standard
