Extra Credit Problems ECE215

Due April 1st, 7:00pm (no late submissions will be accepted).

Show all work. Show units. Show and label free body diagrams. Use your own
paper. Each problem is worth 2.5% toward your Test 1 exam score.
Problem 1
Determine the largest weight W that can be supported by two wires shown in
figure below. The stress in either wire is not to exceed 30 ksi. The crosssectional areas of wires AB and AC are
0.4 in2 and 0.5 in2, respectively.

Problem 2
A brass wire (d = 3.0 mm, E = 110 GPa) is pretensioned to T = 95 N. The coefficient
of thermal expansion for the wire is 20.5 x 10-6/oC. Find the temperature change at
which the wire goes slack (no tension).

Problem 3
A hollow circular pipe (see figure) supports a load P which is uniformly
distributed around a cap plate at the top of the lower pipe. The inner and
outer diameters of the upper and lower parts of the pipe are d1 = 55 mm, d2
= 65 mm, d3 = 63 mm, and d4 = 69 mm, respectively. Pipe lengths are L1 = 3
m and L2 = 4 m. Neglect the self-weight of the pipes. Assume that cap plate
thickness is small compared to L1 and L2. Let E = 110 MPa.
If the tensile stress in the upper part is 1 = 10.5 MPa, what is load P? Also,
what are reactions R1 at the upper support and R2 at the lower support? What
is the stress 2 (MPa) in the lower part?
(Ignore x and q, they are for another part of the problem you are not doing)

Problem 4
An aluminum bar of diameter 21 mm is stretched by axial forces P, causing
its diameter to decrease by 0.019 mm. Find load P.
