This Months Highlights

Writing
In writing we will continue to work on writing high
frequency words from memory, sounding out words as
we write, and constructing sentences independently.
We are also including the blends that weve learned in
our writing, as well as including details in our
drawings. We are going to be focusing on spelling
words with special vowel combinations ending in -ng
and nk, as well as making words plural.
Math
In math we will continue our unit which is focusing on
counting quantities, solving addition and subtraction
problems, and learning multiple strategies to represent
our thinking when solving word problems. Throughout
this unit, students will use manipulatives, drawings,
tools, and notation to show strategies and solutions to
problems. Your child should be able to solve the
problem using a number sentence, a drawing, a
number line, and a tens frame.
Science
We have finished up our Push Pull Go unit, and will now
use what we have learned to investigate our new
science topic: Wood and Paper. In this unit we will
focus on how wood is used
in the many materials in our world including
in the
production of paper. We will continue to
write in our
science journals about our findings.

Double S, Z, F and Plurals

Word Wall Words

We began the year by learning how
to write and recognize certain words
that are commonly seen in the
English language. In each newsletter
I will include the words we are
learning.

The next part of our phonics curriculum will be

teaching the children that in many single syllable
words that end in the letter s, f, or z, the
ending consonant doubles. An easy way for
students to remember this rule is to make up an
acronym. In our reading curriculum this rule is
called the San Francisco Zoo rule.
Students will also be learning about plurals this
month. Specifically they will be taught that when
there are two or more of an item or thing, it is
called a plural. To further this concept, students
will learn that if a word ends in ss, zz, or x, the
plural ending es must be added. (Ex. Dresses,
buzzes, boxes)

What Were Reading

To further students reading comprehension
skills, we will be focusing on the following
Common Core Standards:

Favorite Spring
Book!
As most of you
know, I LOVE
books about
Skippy Jon Jones,
but this spring I
found that my
favorite book is:
There Was An
Old Lady Who
Swallowed A Chick by Lucille
Colandro. This book is just too
funny, as the old lady swallows
a chick, straw, jelly beans, and
a bow!

3.

LITERACY.RL.K.1-ask and answer questions about key

details in a text.
LITERACY.RL.K.3-identify characters, settings, and major
events in a story.
LITERACY.RL.K.10-actively engage in group reading
activities with purpose and understanding.

The books we will be reading this month focus on spring

since the season is changing. Some of the books we will
read include:

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick by: Lucille

Colandro
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by: Eric Carle
Emeraldicious by: Victoria Kann

Reminders

With the weather getting warmer outside, please

remember to send your child in a jacket and
