Essay Against Homework in Schools

David Nguyen Duc

Imagine there is your friend, your homework that is due tomorrow

morning, and your hobby. What would you choose? But before you choose and
make a horrible choice let me advise you enjoy your hobby or play with your
friend because Homework doesnt help academic performance. Children should
have time to do other things too, homework can cause stress to parents and
children, but you know what! Sadly students are more likely to chose homework
over their friends and hobbies.
My first reason is that homework doesnt help academic performance.
According to the documentary the Race to Nowhere In a study released by the
economics of Education Review, homework in Science, English, and History was
shown to have little to no impact on eighth graders test scores in those
subjects, In addition the author of The Case Against Homework states When
kids are young they need a lot of help from their parents, because they cant do
it on their own. I feel like homework is setting up kids to cheat in so many ways.
Another piece of evidence is that in those counties with little of homework,
class time was sometimes cut in half because they had to collect the old
homework and then they have to assign new homework. Says Etta Kravec an
Associate Professor, U. of Arizona, and the author of the book End of homework.
But an interesting fact is The countries that score the highest on the TIMISS
which is the Trends in International Math and Science Study, actually assign less
homework. In addition Finland assigns little homework and its student have
some of the highest test scores in the world. Jay Chugh an AP Biology teacher
said When I first started teaching biology the first thing I did was cut the
homework load in half, and what happened to the Advanced Placement
Examination the scores went up! All this research leads to the fact that
regardless of how much a student sacrifices sleeptime to study more than

usual, he or she will have more trouble understanding material taught in class
and be more likely to struggle on an assignment or test the following day,

.
My second reason is children should have time to do other things besides
homework. For example scientists argue that children need 6 to 7 hours a day
of fresh air, and children dont get that because they need to do homework.
Lots of parents Identify homework as a number on source their children dont
read more. Stanford researchers has found that students in high-achieving
communities who spend too much time on homework experience more stress,
physical health problems, and lack of balance. My next piece of evidence is that
according to Denise Pope, a senior lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of
Education and a co-author of a study published in the journal of Experimental
Education used survey data to examine perceptions about homework, student
well-being and behavioral engagement in sample of 4,317 students from 10
high schools in the upper-middle-class California communities. What they found
was that if children do homework they have less time for friends, family, and
extracurricular pursuits meaning extra activities. Both the survey data and
student responses indicate that spending too much time on homework meant
that students werent meeting their developments needs or cultivating other
critical life skills. Students were more likely to drop activities, not see friends or
family, and not pursue their hobbies. My last piece of evidence is that
homework causes greater stress: for example 56 percent of the students
considered homework a primary source of stress, while 43 percent reviewed
test as a primary source. 33 percent put the pressure to get good grades in that
category, and less than one percent said homework was not stressor and all of
that was according to Denise Popes Survey and student responses.
My last reason is that it can stress parents and children. My first piece of
evidence is that homework can stress the whole family. According to a study
made by the Indiana Purdue University Schools of Education Over 90 percent of
American children say their parents are involved with their homework To
support that piece of evidence is that some students say that assignments are
rarely appropriate for the students specific needs, and that is why the parents
will need to help their children in the childs work. But some kids can go through

that work easily, although others will spend to much time struggling with
homework affecting their health My second to last piece of proof is that when
it comes to stress, 56 percent of the students considered homework a primary
source of stress, according to the website
www.healthline.com
. My last and
creepiest piece of evidence is that on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 3 girls
attempted to commit suicide and 1 of the girls said that If Im dead, I wont
have to do homework anymore said Huang Wanting, one of the girls that
attempted to commit suicide. The reason she tried to commit suicide is because
the homework load this time was much more than usual. Also another reason
they tried to commit suicide is because the 3 girls were scared that if their math
teacher who is also the main teacher finds their homework unfinished, the
teacher will have them stand outside outside the classroom, or even outside the
the school until the teacher calls them to come back in says Huang Wanting. So
the day before the attempt the girls were scared of the punishment so they
stayed at home and worked on it the entire day and still were unable to finish
their homework and were really scared of the punishment.
I hope after listening/reading to my speech you will help the poor children
decrease the amount of homework in some of their countries, but my question
is: Would you commit suicide because of homework?(point at someone!)
