Reflection
As an educational leader who is trying to implement change into their building it is easy to
maintain focus on the occurrences within your building and lose sight that your school is part
of a larger community. A great deal of being a competent educational leader is realizing the
importance of building relationships with all stakeholders. Education and learning does not
cease occur when students leave the confines of the school walls. There is expertise within
the community that can be utilized when the school takes a community involved approach to
implementing school change.
My first artifact is a link to Des Moines Public Schools new Standards Referenced Grading
website. Our district is in the process of implementing a new grading policy district wide
which has not gone without its controversy or hiccups along the way. As part of the
implementation process curriculum has been redesigned utilizing teachers and curriculum
coordinators to match our written curriculum guides to the scoring guidelines used in
standards referenced grading. Parents and community members were consulted throughout
the process. At Roosevelt we had a few teachers who decided to implement Standards
Reference Grading ahead of the implementation schedule; prior to parent teacher
conferences during the fall of 2013 I attended a parent meeting where the two English
teachers gave a presentation to parents regarding the new grading system. Based on their
presentation and the questions/feedback received from the parents I developed a pamphlet
to provide to parents who had students that were enrolled in classes with teachers that were
implementing Standards Referenced Grading.
The district in its implementation has consulted with Marzano Research Laboratory and
provided a district wide training for staff members during the summer of 2014. In providing
ongoing support to teachers and building administrators, a monthly training has been
provided to teachers and staff from the district leaders to provide support in areas of
developing assessments, gradebook support, and building capacity to staff to go back and
train staff members within their building.
