Objectives
The students will use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract using
one more, one less, ten more and ten less.
Materials:
1. Smart Board
2. Connecting Cubes
3. Pencil
4. 9-1 Lesson packet/ Homework
5. iPads
6. 9-1 game, Look and See
Procedures:
1. The teacher will call all students to the carpet.
2. The teacher will use the Topic 9 opener, The store needs more, to help the students develop a
sense of the vocabulary.
3. The teacher will then explain that they are going to start a new unit, and give the class an overview
of the unit by giving them the academic vocabulary used, (in the Topic 9 teacher book)
4. The teacher will show the interactive video that goes along with section 9-1, asking questions and
keeping the students involved as the video stops.
5. Once the video is finished, the students will go back to their seats and the teacher will show an
example to the class of using one more, one less, ten more and ten less.
6. As a class, the students will complete the first page of their lesson 9-1 packet, working with the
teacher to collaborate on answers.
7. The students will then split up into their small math groups, which are determined by level.
*There are three leveled math groups. Each student knows what group they are in and when
they are to come to the carpet. One group will be at the carpet, another group will be playing math
games on the iPads, and the other group will be doing partner work, working on the page provided.
(Core Activity, Look and See, 9-1)
8. The first group will come to the carpet and the teacher will work with this group on the rest of the
packet using the smart board.
9. The teacher will switch the groups once the first group is finished. (The groups are each worked
with differently, as the lower groups need more assistance from the teacher and the higher groups can
work more individually)
10. Once the teacher has met with all three groups, the students will go back to their seats and pull out
their practice 9-1 homework and put it in their take home folder.
Assessment:

The students will complete a homework assignment that goes along with the lesson and have it
corrected the following day in school. Once the unit is finished, the students will be tested on that
topic.
Accommodations/Modifications:
We have a student with a minor hearing disability in the classroom, so I wear a device that projects my
voice louder into a speaker.
