Historians call the time before there was writing prehistory. Mary
Leakey found bones in east Africa that were more than 1.5 million years
ago in 1959. They belonged to hominid, an early ancestor of humans. An
ancestor is a relative who lived in the past. Another interesting thing is
that Australopithecus is one of the earliest ancestors of humans. Donald
Johansson found bones from another early ancestor. The tests showed
that she was a two walking creature who lived more than 3 million
years. As humans developed tools and new hunting techniques, they
formed a society, or a community of people who share a common
culture. These societies developed cultures with languages, religions,
and art. Hunter gatherers are people who hunt animals, gather plants,
seeds, fruits, and nuts. Thousands of years ago people painted caves.
Scholars knew little about the beliefs of early people.
