Infusing Reading into Science Learning

o Scientific literacy is the knowledge and understanding of scientific


concepts and processes required for personal decision making,
participation in civic and cultural affairs, and economic productivity
(National Research Council, 1996, p. 22).
o Content area teachers tend to focus more on covering content than on
teaching students how to learn from the texts.
o Their intervention focused on three areas:
o Reading strategy instruction
Team developed and taught 22 lessons about
comprehension strategies
Questioning
Think-pair-share
Two-column note taking
Paraphrasing
o A home reading program
Students had a rotating collection of science books. Each
week, they chose one book to bring home and read with
their family.
Students shared what they learned the following week in
class
o Professional development
Team participated in three professional development
workshops about integrating reading instruction into an
inquiry-based science curriculum.
