Unit 1 Essential Questions

1. * How has Europe developed as both individual nations and as a group?

Europe is made up of separate nations. Each nation represents itself. The nations of
Europe wanted to find a way to prevent wars and spread the safety and peace to people who
live in Europe. In 1993, the separate nations came together and became one. They now call
themselves the European Union or E.U. for short. This new development made Europes bond
come closer.
The nations that are now working together to prevent damage still represent their own
place. The E.U. is split into parts so that no one holds more control over another. The different
parts are the European Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission.
When an issue is brought up the all the nations get a vote so they can take part in the decision
making process. Also, the nations that are included in the E.U. decide whether upcoming
nations that are interested in taking part is worthy enough and fits the criteria. Europes
individual nations became stronger because they have the support that the E.U. has created.
2. * What political, economic and special conditions exist between European nations due to
their individual history?
In any group there is going to be problems and with a way to stop the problems is to
draw a line and create certain conditions. That is exactly what the European Union did. When
wanting to become a part of the E.U. there are special conditions you have to require before
officially making it in. Every nation is required to be democratic. The nations government must
be a democracy because if its any different you will run into disagreements on how things
should be handled. Also, your economy has to be stable. The European Union doesnt want any

under developed economy that is going to need money all the times and has economic
problems that will crush its nation and possibly hurt the E.U. and most of all it has to be in
a certain point in Europe.
An example of this is the nation Turkey. Turkey wanted to be in the group of the E.U., but
each member had to sit down and decide if it was hitting all the conditions. Turkey has
developed by abolishing the death penalty to prisoners or any human and that they can be
easily used to help solve problems in the Middle East, but they do have negative aspects to look
at. They havent come to realize that the Armenian genocide was wrong and they do not have
stable economy. The economy alone is a big issue to look at because it plays a huge part in
choosing a nation, but every nation has its strengths and weaknesses.
