Portland during World War I

~During the war, some people in Oregon fighting in
Europe
~Residents volunteered time and money for war bond
drives, and different organizations canned food to be
donated to hospitalized soldiers
~ During the war schools and workplaces had gas masks

Portland during World War II

~ Portlanders feared raids by Japanese bombers so Japanese
Americans were put into camps
~ The food products were rationed
~ Portlands labor supply reduced due to military enlistment
giving women and minorities jobs
~ Ferry Village had constructed a shipyard to build 30
merchant vessels for the British. About 30,000 people
worked at the shipyards
