What is Cyber Security

Cyber security is the body of technologies, processes
and practices designed to protect networks,
computers, programs and data from attack, damage
or unauthorized access. In a computing context, the
term securityimplies cybersecurity.

Cyber Attacks
Cyber attacks on digital systems are starting to
become much more common. To cope with these
threats, certain activities have to be introduced to
guard digital systems. According to a December 2010
analysis of U.S. spending plans, the federal
government has allotted over $13 billion annually to
cybersecurity over the next five years.

Epidemic
The U.S Department of Energy is attacked over 10
million times a day, which include everything from
simple scans to phishing attempts that use malicious
code to take over software.
The Pentagon also receives over 10 million attacks
daily.
Energy company BP is attacked over 120,000 times
daily.
The state of Utah is attacked over 20 million times a
day.

Job Potential
Due to all of the cyber attacks than happen everyday,
the field of cyber security is becoming huge. People
who specialize in cyber security are the most soughtafter in the tech field. The field has grown 3.5 times
more than any other field over the past 5 years.
Current staffing shortages are estimated between
20,000 and 40,000 and are expected to continue for
years to come. ESG just completed a survey on 2014
IT spending intentions, and results show that 42% of
responding organizations intend to increase headcount
in information security. This is the highest percentage
of all IT skillsets in demand.

Job Outlook
The job outlook for Information Security Analysts, the
career that focuses on cyber security, is expected to
rise 37% over the next 10 years, which means
demand is very high for those in the career.

Salary
The average salary for U.S. security professionals to
be $116,000, or approximately $55 per hour. That's
nearly three times the national median income for fulltime wage and salary workers, according to the
Bureau of Labor Statistics.
