Lesson: 16

Title: Determine the theme of the story

Standard:

LAFS.5.RL.3.7, LAFS.5.RL.1.2, LAFS.5.RL.1.1, LAFS.5.RL.3.9, LAFS.5.RL.2.6

Objective:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use details from the text to determine the theme of a story.

Warm-Up: (Table

"Share with your table teams what you infer the theme to be in the text,

Teams)

Lunch Money. What is your text-evidence for your theme?"


-Standing, hands on head when table teams are ready to share

10:30-10:40
-Share teams with class to determine common theme: hard work and determination you can accomplish your
goals.
Purpose: Today we are going to closely examine how the author supported this them within a portion of the text.
-Introduce EQ

Focus for Instruction:

"Rather then re-reading we are going to listen and take notes!"

"While listening to the audio file we want to focus on what the question is asking us and what key details we
must know in order to successful."

10:40-11:00

"What is a fast note-taking technique that helps you keep track of key details? How could this help us as a
class?"
Start audio: 5:27-5:33
"The author just described how long it took the character to accomplish his goal of creating a comic book.I am
going to quickly record a few details about that in my notes
because working on something for a long time demonstrates determination!"
5:33-6:30
"I heard the author say that Greg had to answer a lot of hows. He had many questions about creating a comic
book and had to do research to find the answers.
Think in your heads if this shows hard work and determination? ... Thumbs up/down
Lets quickly jot this down in our notes and get back to the story!
