Reflection #1

While writing this paper I kept in mind the audience, which in this case is my
English class. This is how I used SLO A. We all read the same reading and watched
the same video, but had completely different interpretations. It was very interesting
reading everyones different ideas, as well as reading the comments on my ideas.
Some people said my ideas were on the dark side. Professor Alapin said, You picked
up on one of the aspect of the image that always haunts and confuses me. When I
mentioned the Holocaust, it brought sensitivity to the situation. When Maya
Espinosa did my peer review she said, and your supporting example that the
holocaust supports this comes across as a logical fallacy to me. She saw that
example as the Nazis (the outsiders) being violent rather than the prisoners and
therefor my comparison being inaccurate. I just had that example in the wrong
place. I had it in a place talking about the violence rather than including in it with
talking about the forcefulness of the situation. Talking about the Holocaust is a very
touchy subject and could easily offend someone. My grandpa and his family were
actually sent to a concentration camp, so Im used to talking about it and hearing
about it. Keeping my audience in mind, I tried to make it as brief as possible to get
my point across.
Throughout my paper I have a lot of different ideas going on. I try and relate
it back to my main point, but in my rough draft I struggled with that. I needed more
evidence and quotations. When I was talking about Carlina White, I had no
quotations or real evidence. I added in a quote to create evidence. SLO B is about
getting a point across through an argumentative perspective. My argument is that
anyone learns based on human nature and the others around them. I tried to relate
all my ideas around my argument.
SLO C consists of doing research to further explain the topic. Doing research
for this paper was reading other students ideas and thoughts on Platos allegory.
That was the best way of doing research for me in this situation. Considering we
dont have a time to meet and discuss everything, by doing the discussion boards
helped me expand on my thoughts. It also allowed others to comment on my ideas
and hear their feedback on what they thought or if they think Im completely wrong.
I personally like that we are forced to write our thoughts and say what we think
instead of being too nervous in a class to share what you think. Everyone gets a
chance to say what they think which helped me by getting to read everyones
responses.
