You are required to complete to following sections for your first coursework.
Part One (18 marks)
Define and describe the properties of timber as an engineering material:

Shear and bending strength parallel, perpendicular and at an angle to the grain

Part Two (12 marks)

a) Explain the current strength grading methodology and criteria adopted in Guyana and
how does this relate to design standards (BS EN 1995-1 and BS 5628).
b) Provide the grade strengths (and other engineering properties) for at least 10 of the
most commonly used timber in Guyana.
c) Provide a list of the standard sawn available timber sizes.
Part Three (10 marks)
A brief history into Glulam Timber and give the advantages and disadvantages over sawn
timber.
