Resources

Motivation and Introduction:

1. Children will begin lesson sitting on the mat facing the interactive white board.
2. Introduce the lesson inviting children to pull items out of the mystery box, saying:
Today we will be learning about something very interesting! In this special mystery
box I have, there is clues to what we might be learning about. Okay, when I ask you to
please come and pick out something quickly and quietly (Teacher should allow 2 -3
students to pick items out at a time).
3.

Mystery box
with
celebration
props in it.

Once all students have selected a mystery item, ask students what they think they will
be learning about this lesson. (Children should say birthdays, Christmas and Easter
as the mystery items relate to those three celebrations).

4. Bring childrens attention to the lesson focus of celebrations, saying:

So we now know that the mystery items in the box relate to Christmas, Easter and

Birthdays. Does anyone know what those three events have in common? They are all
celebrations! Today we are going to be learning about different celebrations! We are
also lucky becuase we get to use ICT/ technology to help us with out learning today!
5. Complete celebrations brainstorm with children on interactive white board; they will
be required to generate ideas on different celebrations and also features of
Christmas, Easter and Birthdays.
6.

IWB
Celebrations
PowerPoint

Once the brainstorm is complete inform children they will be completing three
activities in todays lesson one on birthdays, Christmas and Easter. Tell them that
the groups they are working with relate to what they pulled out of the mystery box. (5
items will be Christmas related so those children will worked together etc.)

Assessment
Checklist

7. Sent the children, group at a time to the tabletop area they will begin working at.
Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):
1.

8:35am

Children will begin the rotation activities, rotating to the next activity every fifty minutes. The
children will know to rotate clockwise when they hear the celebrations song. The rotation will
be as followed:

Rotation One Birthdays1.

Children will begin the rotation sitting in a group at the table, where they will be
introduced to the topic of birthdays. Questions to generate conversation can include:
-Can anybody tell me what a birthday is?
-Does anybody know why we celebrate birthdays?
-Does everybody celebrate their birthday on the same day?
-What date is your birthday?
-What are some items we might use to help us celebrate birthdays?
2.

Once children have an understanding of the topic, explain the activities that will be
completed in this rotation session. This can be done saying:

Today we will be making a collage about our ideal birthday! We will be taking photos on the
ipads of different birthday things we might like to have at our birthday and then we will use a
special app called pic collage to make our collage on the ipad I will show you have to use the
app before we start! Has anyone ever used this app before?
3.

Birthday bag
full of
birthday
props
(cards,
steamers
etc.)

Demonstrate to children how to use the camera on the ipad and also how to use
the pic collage app. Some points to touch on include:
-How to focus the camera
-Using the flash
-Accessing the photos taken whilst in the pic collage app
-Adding photos
-Changing the collage frames
-Adding stickers and texts to the pic collage
-Changing the background
-Saving the collage

4.

Ipads x 5,
with pic
collage on
them

Allow children to commence the activity, advising them they have 10 minutes to
complete their collage. Whilst they are doing this watch them to insure they use the
equipment properly. Also question children throughout to extend their learning. Questions

include:
-Why did you include this in your collage?
-Have you used some of these items at a birthday before?
-Can you think of anything else you might use to help celebrate a birthday?
5.

After 10 minutes get children to stop what they are doing and save their collages
if they havent already done so.

6.

Conclude the rotation by getting children to show each other their pic collages and
also having a discussion. Questions you can ask children include:

Assessment
Checklist

-What have you learnt about birthdays?

-Can some please explain why they included certain elements in their pic collage?
-Was there anything that wasnt here today you might like at your ideal birthday?

-Does anybody know why we celebrate Christmas?
-Can anybody tell me some things their family do to celebrate Christmas?

8:45am
2.

Once children have a brief understanding on the topic they will be learning about,
explain the activity they will be completing in this rotation. This can be done saying:
In this rotation we will be learning all about Christmas as we do a OR Codes
Christmas Scavenger hunt! You will be going in groups of 2 or 3 and using the ipads to
go around the room and scan the different codes. When you scan the code a question
will appear and I want you to record your answers on the quiz sheet I give you. I know
using ipads and OR codes might be a new concept for you, so I will show you how to
use them!

3.

Ipads x 3,
with QR
code
scanners on
them

Explain to children what QR Codes are and also demonstrate to children how to
use the ipads and QR Code scanner correctly. Some key points to touch on include:
-QR codes are a machine readable code that are able to be scanned, when scanned
they take you to a web link or message
-Show child what the codes looks like
-Show children what app they will be using to scan the codes
-Demonstrate how to scan a code, emphasis importance to hold ipad still etc.

4.

Allow children to begin the activity, instructing them that they have ten minutes to
complete the activity. Whilst they are doing this watch them to insure they use the
equipment properly. Also provide them with assistance and suggestions if they get stuck
on certain questions.

5.

After ten minutes advise children to stop what they are doing and return back to
the table top area.

QR codes
(spread out
throughout
the room)

6.

Conclude the rotation by going through each QR Code Christmas Quiz question
with the children to stimulate a discussion. Get them to share their answers and takes
notes on what other people say. Insure to correct children on any misconceptions and
give them further information on each question.
Rotation Three Easter-

Assessment
Checklist

1.

Children will begin the rotation sitting in a group at the table, where they will be
introduced to the topic of Easter. Questions to generate conversation can include:
-Can anybody tell me what Easter is?
-What do you know about Easter?
-Does anybody know what day we celebrate Easter?
-Can anybody think of some symbols we might use to represent Easter?

2.

Once children have a brief understanding on the topic they will be learning about,
explain the activity they will be completing in this rotation. This can be done saying:
In this rotation we will be learning all about Easter! We will be looking at all these
different books (point and pick up books that are in centre of table) to help us find
some interesting fact and information on Easter. Once you have found an interesting
point about Easter you will then get to draw a picture of it on the cards provide with
your pencils. After you have finished your drawing we will use these interesting
recording pegs to record the interesting fact we discovered and drew! We will clip the
peg onto our drawing! I know some of you might not know how to use the pegs but
that ok I will show you how to now, so you can move through the activity at your own
pace when we commence!

8:55am

3.

Easter
literature

Demonstrate to students how to use recording pegs. Touch on the following points:
Recording
Pegs

-What you need to press to record

-The length of time you have to record something
-How to peg it onto the paper
-What they might choose to record (reasoning behind choice, appropriate language,
relevant etc.)
-Necessary to speak in a loud and clear voice
4.

Allow children to begin the activity, instructing them that they have ten minutes to
complete the activity. Whilst they are doing this watch them to insure they use the
equipment properly and picking suitable points out of the book. Some children may
need assistance when choosing a point and some may also need to be reminded on
how to use the pegs.

5.

After ten minutes advise children to stop what they are doing and place their
drawings and recording pegs down on the table in front of them.

6.

Conclude the rotation by getting each child to hold up their picture and play their
recording of what it is. Prompt children to have a discussion about what each child
found and extend on any points they may make. It is important to generate discussion
on each point, this can be done through asking:

Paper
Coloured
drawing
utensils

-Why did you pick that point?

-Did you already know that fact or was it something new you discovered today?
-Does anybody else do that in their family at Easter time? (if it is about a cultural
tradition etc.)
Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

Assessment
Checklist

1. Once child have complete the last rotation they will be asking to re-join the teacher down on
the mat. They will be advised to come down group at a time.
2. Children will take part in a guided discussion where they will share ideas on new things they
have learnt. The idea they share will be added to the brainstorm that was previously used in

the lesson introduction.
3. Once children have finished adding to the brainstorm, conclude the lesson by asking them
three broad questions that restart and refine what was learnt as a result of the lesson.
Questions are:
-Can anybody tell me some celebration we celebrate? (is expected they say Christmas, Easter
and birthday as they are the ones that were just learnt about)
-Can anybody share with be something new they learnt about Easter/ Christmas/ Birthdays?
-Does anybody know some of the ICT/ technology we used in todays lesson? How did it help
us with out learning? Did you enjoy it?
9:05am
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)

IWB with
previous
PowerPoint
loaded onto
it.

The lesson objectives will be judged through observation and questioning. The educator running each
rotation session will complete a checklist and take anecdotal notes as the children progress through
the activity. As the children are split into three groups (5 students per group) it makes it easier for the
educator to assess as there is less children to observe, so therefore they can gage a deeper
understanding on the childs understanding. The lesson objectives will also be assessed in the mat
session at the conclusion of the lesson as the teacher will take notes in accordance to the answers
children give in regards to the questions she asks.

Assessment
Checklist

Once the final discussion is complete children will be dismissed group at a time to go back to their
desk, ready to commence the next lesson. (In accordance to groups they were in for the rotations)

The lesson objects will be specifically assessed as followed:

Lesson Objective One Identify three celebrations that are commemorated around the world-

10:15am

This will be assessed through questioning at the commencement of the lesson, throughout the
lesson and also at the conclusion of the lesson. At the beginning of the lesson children will be
asked what some celebrations are, the teacher will take brief notes in regards to who answers
and what their response is. Throughout the lesson the teacher can assess this objective by
asking children what celebration they are learning about in this activity etc. At the conclusion of
the lesson this objective will be assessed through further questioning, to confirm that students
have remembered the celebrations they learnt about today. It is important to note that children
may name other celebrations and that is still an acceptable answer, however the teacher may
choose to question this further to gain an understanding.
Lesson Objective Two State at least three (3) new facts about celebrations (Easter, Christmas
and Birthdays)o

This objective will be assessed throughout the lesson at each rotation and also briefly at the
end of the lesson. Throughout the lesson at each rotation the educator will complete a checklist
and take notes on what the children has learnt. This can be done effectively through observing
the child complete the activity and also through questioning them. At the end of the lesson this
point will be assessed, as children will be required to add to the brainstorm so the teacher will
be able to assess what information they have learnt.

Lesson Objective Three Use the provided ICT to create an end product-

This objective will be assessed throughout the lesson at each rotation. The educator will
complete a checklist in regards to the child being able to use the ICT provided to assist with

their learning and to create an end product. There will be room for anecdotal notes, so
educators can note down a childs ability and efficiency in terms of using the ICT.
