Introduction to Durapipe
ABS Properties
Working Temperatures
(See graph below)
Durapipe ABS is one of the few plastic pipe
systems that can operate at temperatures
as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius. This
makes it perfectly suited for applications
such as air conditioning, chilled water and
boosted cold water.
Impact Resistance
The butadiene content in the material gives it
outstanding impact strength and toughness,
even at below zero temperatures. This makes
the system equally suited for above or below
ground use.
Solvent Weld Jointing
Simple and reliable solvent weld jointing
makes installation fast, easy and cost
effective. There is no requirement for a
highly skilled installation crew or expensive
equipment and it removes the health and
safety issues related to hot equipment
used on other pipe systems.
Non-Toxic and Taint Free
Durapipe ABS does not contain any
harmful metallic stabilisers, and is widely
used to convey high purity de-ionised water
in semiconductor and pharmaceutical
applications.
Ductile Strength
Durapipe ABS is a ductile material and
the fracture mode resembles that of soft
copper. Mechanical damage causes ductile
distortion and tearing, the localised nature
minimising any loss of the pipe contents.
This makes ABS far superior to other brittle
materials, where a fracture is accompanied
by rapid crack propagation and hazardous
material fragmentation.
Lightweight
At one-sixth the weight of steel pipes,
Durapipe ABS is much easier to handle,
especially during installation at site.
Corrosion Resistant
Durapipe ABS is designed to handle a wide
range of chemicals including moderately
strong mineral acids and caustic solutions.
Refer to Philmac for a full listing of
chemical resistance.
Superior Flow
Low fluid friction allows higher flow
velocities than metal pipes, and also
inhibits the formation of scale, which
delivers savings in pump energy
consumption, and reduced pressure drops.
Low Installed Cost
The combination of ease of handling and
speed of jointing makes ABS an extremely
cost effective system to install relative to
threaded, welded, or soldered metal systems.
Broad Size Range
The Durapipe ABS System consists of
pipes, fittings and valves in imperial sizes
from 3/8 to 8 Nominal Bore.

Applications
Building Services
Due to superior performance at low
temperatures and ductility, ABS is well
suited to any situation where chilled water
is being utilised. Examples include air
conditioning in commercial buildings
(e.g. office developments), chilled water
and boosted cold water.
Chemical Resistance
ABS has excellent chemical resistance
(please see www.philmac.com.au for
more detail). However it is important to
consider both contained chemicals and the
external environment when assessing the
suitability of ABS. It is essential to check
the following:
i. Suitability of chemicals within the
transfer material.
ii. Ensure environment around ABS is
controlled, so that no unspecified
chemicals will come into contact with
the pipe system.
iii. Ensure everything that is in direct
contact with the pipe system has been
verified (for example pipe clips).
Pure Water
Any application where water has been
purified (e.g. Reverse osmosis) or where
it is important water is not contaminated
by the pipe system. Because of the nontoxic nature of the material, ABS ensures
water stays completely pure during
transfer. Examples of applications include
medical facilities (e.g. renal or MRI units),
laboratories and pharmaceutical.
Marine
Circumstances in the marine environment
require pipe systems that are noncorrosive, easy to handle and tough.
ABS is able to survive in tough marine
conditions while meeting the challenging
Lloyds marine specifications.
Industrial
The characteristics of ABS make it well
suited to a wide variety of industrial
applications. Water, Wastewater and
Desalinisation plants, breweries, wineries
and food processing plants are all typical
applications.
UV Resistance
Care should be taken to protect systems
exposed to direct sunlight, as over time
UV can degrade the material. If the system
is likely to be exposed to direct sunlight,
Philmac recommends painting the system,
using water based emulsions to provide
UV protection (note: do not use cellulose
based paints).
Thread Sealant
Philmac recommend the use of PTFE tape
only on threaded connections as some
thread sealants can adversely react with
the ABS material.
Thermal Insulation
ABS has excellent thermal insulation
properties, and does not sweat as much
as metal systems. In some instances
lagging is recommended to meet certain
specifications. Care should be taken over
the material used for lagging. The below
are suitable materials:
Fibre wool
Armaflex Class 1 HT
Koolphen K Phenolic Foam
Polystyrene
Please note that lagging should not be
bonded to the pipe. Refer to the Philmac
website for further information.
For more detailed information about Durapipe ABS pipe system please see www.philmac.com.au
Installation instructions
1. Cut Pipe
Pipe must be cut clean and square.
Suitable wheel cutter will eliminate swarf.
If saw is used care must be taken to ensure
swarf does not enter system.
5. Apply Cement
Using a clean brush apply Durapipe ABS
solvent cement to the pipe and fitting. It is
important to apply Durapipe ABS solvent
cement quickly to ensure excessive force is not
required to make joint. Size of brush should be
approx half size of pipe to be joined.
6. Insert Pipe
Immediately after applying Durapipe ABS
solvent cement insert pipe fully into fitting
do not twist. Hold the pipe and fitting
together for about 10 seconds. Application
of the correct amount of Durapipe ABS
solvent cement should result in a neat bead
of cement around the fitting edge.
