TEACHING & LEARNING

EXPERIENCES
(include learner diversity)

Intro (5 min) The concept of energy. Assess

prior knowledge by asking what they understand
about it.
Body (40min)
Task 1 (20 min) Use resources to discover the
answers to the questions below. Place in a
Text2MindMap. Answer questions: What does
energy do? Name five different forms of energy.
In what unit is energy measured? What are
kinetic & potential energy? What is the term used
when energy causes an object to move or
change shape? What is stored energy? Name
four different forms of energy.
Task 2 (10 min) How does didgeridoo player
create its sound? What type of energy, kinetic or
potential, is causing this? Put answers into the
mind map.
Task 3 (10 min) When dropping a tennis ball from
a height why doesnt it return to the original
height? What type of energy is the ball displaying
when it is motionless at the top of the bounce?
What type of energy is it displaying while
dropping to the ground? Add these answers to
the mind map. Look at this YouTube clip.
Conclusion (5 min) Discuss as a class answers
on mind maps to all questions getting new
person each time to talk each question.

Intro (5 min) Using Text2MindMap, students

brainstorm different energy types that they recall
from the previous lesson.
Body (35 min)
Task 1 (15 min) Students will use the BBC
Bitesize Resources to learn about energy
transfer, transformation and the law of
conservation of energy and how to interpret
Sankey diagrams.
Task 2 (20 min) Students will create their own
Sankey diagrams using Text2MindMap. Students
will be given a number of different scenarios on
which they can create Sankey diagrams.
Conclusion (10 min) Play a Kahoot Quiz to test
the knowledge learned during the class. The quiz
contains 5 questions: What is energy transfer?;
What is energy transformation?; What is the
Law of the Conservation of Energy?; What is
the energy transformation in a toaster?;
Energy is usually transferred from an iPod
as?.

Intro (5 min) Introduce concept reducing

energy consumption by energy efficiency. Set
scene with data on proportion of household
electricity usage from lights. Define power, light
emission, units of energy. Short quiz to assess
knowledge.
Body (40 min) Assign students a partner.
Task 1 (10 min) Work individually to describe in
your own words, with diagrams, the different
ways 3 types of light bulbs work (incandescent,
compact fluorescent, LED). Put your findings in
Padlet.
Task 2 (15 min) Work individually to calculate the
efficiency for each bulb type & research other
advantages and disadvantages of each. Present
findings from Part 1 & 2 in Text2MindMap.
Task 3 (15 min) Work w partner: discuss opinions,
come to a joint conclusion, develop oral

Intro (10 min) Introduce the topic of renewable

energy showing a YouTube video. Individually,
students do a brainstorm, using Answer Garden,
of different types of renewable energy.
Body (35 min)
Task 1 (20 min) Students are placed into six
groups and each group researches one type of
renewable energy, its advantages and
disadvantages. Resources for each type of
renewable energy can be found on the
WebQuest. Findings are compiled in Padlets that
are accessible by all students in the class.
Students also prepare a 2-minute presentation of
their findings, which they will deliver to the class.
Task 2 (15 min) Students deliver an informal oral
presentation of their findings to the class. Other
students can take down notes or read their
findings on the Padlet.
Conclusion (5 min) Students choose one
renewable energy source they would recommend
for use in Australia. For Homework, they will
write a persuasive letter, justifying their choice,
to Australias Chief Scientist.
